The World’s Largest Sustainable Living Event Returns to Washington DC and San Francisco

Washington, DC (August 2008)  - Returning to Washington DC and San Francisco, Green Festival™, a joint project of Global Exchange and Co-op America, is the largest and most diverse green living event in the country.

Now in its seventh year and in five cities nationwide, Green Festival™ brings together upwards to 175,000 attendees and is the world’s most authentic green living show, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability through extensive event-greening efforts.

At Green Festival™, there’s something for everyone: kid and teen activities, green film festival, live music, 150 speakers and workshops, a green marketplace with more than 350 local and national green businesses, and dozens of community and nonprofit groups.

Over the weekend in both cities, Green Festival™ attendees will explore the best in green: the latest in clean/green technology, green building, socially responsible investing, eco-fashion, natural body products, renewable energy, green careers and green-collar jobs, natural foods, eco-tourism, and more.

As the world goes green, Green Festival™, since its first event in 2002, has remained a model of environmental and social leadership, consistently providing the most up-to-date and authoritative information for consumers on every aspect of green living. Co-op America’s Green Business Network uses a stringent screening process to ensure all exhibitors and sponsors meet the best practices and highest standards for environmental integrity and social responsibility.

While many events and tradeshows are notoriously wasteful, Green Festival™ demonstrates an unmatched commitment to reducing impact by walking its green talk. Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and meticulous sorting procedures to reuse, recycle and compost, 97% of all show waste is recovered, translating into only 3% of the waste going into landfills.

An organic food court specializing in vegetarian culinary delights and an organic beer and wine garden make it a great place to spend the entire day or weekend!

“There are a million beautiful ways that people are working together to improve the health and ecosystems of our planet, to strengthen communities and build an enduring infrastructure,” states Green Festival director Denise Hamler.  “Green Festival™ is the perfect place to bring them together for a weekend of joy and celebration and to congratulate and support one another.”

The next Green Festivals™ will take place in Washington DC, November 8-9 and San Francisco, Nov 14-15-16, 2008.

In an increasingly globalized economy, science and technology careers extend beyond national boundaries. Universities and research institutes worldwide are addressing these developments by setting up exchange programs, double and/or joint degrees, and foreign campuses. Several EU-U.S. co-operation ventures promote the training and mobility of researchers and are likely to be further developed.

Join us as we work to

  • Achieve a common understanding of the situation and main trends
  • Identify key obstacles to increasing transatlantic mobility of students and researchers
  • Discover ways and means for strengthening the exchange of scientists and engineers between the EU and the United States in quantitative and qualitative terms

Key Questions This Workshop Will Address

  • How to stimulate the development of transatlantic degrees to attract more talented young people into science careers?
  • What innovative curricula are needed to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers to engage in global R&D careers?
  • What scientist mobility schemes can best contribute to the building of lasting transatlantic networks of excellence?
  • How the transatlantic mobility of scientists can best contribute to innovation in a global context?

Who Should Attend

  • Research leaders and policy-makers at universities, research institutes, companies, ministries, agencies, and research promotion organizations concerned with international exchange of researchers
  • Scientists with experience of research stay abroad
