An Idea WhoseTime has Come

This is the Biomimicry Institute's philosophy, influence and genius spreading far and wide. Once uttered in an earlier post that Israel is the unequivocal ground zero for research and development within the sector, my words are coming to fruition: in fact the country has recently formed its charter chapter. On the home front, this is a photo of the national BMI brain trust: think BIG brains! Think vision over sight! Think substantive, life altering concepts- not the typical green washing abominations to only make a soulless corporation seem or appear connected to others outside the boardroom / stockholders / when in fact / only the contrary is true.

Loss of all street cred: about 3 or 4 years ago, I was attempting to win something akin to a "dad o' the year" contest; this required, or so I thought at the time, shelling out a huge sum of cash for "The Wiggles" world tour of that particular era: front row, center stage, best four seats in the Fed-Ex Forum. If not mistaken, approximately 20,000 additional suckers had the same visions of parental grandeur as I. The following morning, I found this pic on my cell phone; I know its a stretch- and perhaps an immense rationalization on my part- but I have always touted the image as one similar to the young lady which adorns the Kiss Alive 1 album. Girls do indeed rock, whether they be 4, 5, 6 / or, 14, 15 16; they just need to be exposed to all thats out there: remember moms and pops, what you adamantly and staunchly forbid is exactly what they will be drawn to!!!

Lincoln (D) - Arkansas; US Senate

Senator Lincoln has a fairly nifty new tool on her congressional site; its entitled "From the Inbox"; it is a rather novel vehicle for constituents to email questions to her from anywhere in the state / have her answer them in detail on a weekly basis via video replies. Nothing beats the reality of actual face time, yet one must admit, this is immeasurably more personal than simply reading the transcript from a stump speech in Hooterville / watching a sanitized interview from DC / or worse, hearing dinosaurs from the "cant walk and chew bubble-gum" gangs- i.e. the buffoonery of the The McLaughlin Group- proffering their unique brand of hidebound foolishness. If you choose to join in the fun, here are the pertinent email addies:

Latest post on recent Paul Krugman column:

http://ecolocalizer.com/2010/08/10/are-we-on-a-crumbling-road-to-nowhere/#comments

There is an old adage stating that
the more you know, the more you realize you, in fact, know nothing. Where global
sustainability is the matter at hand, the script gets flipped; the more you know /
the additional knowledge one acquires, the deeper your genuine certitude runs; a
certitude that all things occurring everywhere, in respect to everything "green" are
bandages at best; breeders of false hopes at their very worst. I say this for one
and one reason alone; the single, solitary factor that is going to unravel all of
our kith and kin's most strategically sound plans is the one keyhole for which there
is no key: population explosion / loss of control / an inexhaustible search for
resources. Yet, to even utter so makes one a pariah in eco circles, and venture into
territories where many a loon lay in wait for some Draconian legislation on a
universal scale.

Either / or scenario is scary as hell to ponder; but, lets get down to brass tax and stop bull-shitting one another simply for the sake of allaying our fears:
address global population; until that begins, all else is moot.

Annually, the bluff city is treated to one of the truly eclectic events occurring- anywhere- in the lower 48: Gonerfest. This year is no different as GF7 is mere weeks away. GF is one of the sweetest spots on the planet, for the entirity of 4 days, to people-watch, to literally reach out and touch the performers, and if your lucky, go home missing a few teeth- ha ha. Whatever your opinion on "Punk", whether it be within a re birthing era / gasping in its Hep C / TB death rattle- this is not to be missed.

Why is this year's worlwide gathering such an urgency? No more, no less than the arrival of Brooklyn, NY's own "The Girls at Dawn"; an all female, hallucinatory, pop trio- seemed destined to universal approval or panning, depending on which side of cynicism you live on. Arrive with no expectations or pre conceived notions; check your social mores at the door; prepare for something absolutely original and refreshing in this cookie cutter industry- ART. FYI: Erin- vocals, guitar; Ana- vocals, bass; Sarah- drums...

ROBOT PILLS... NANO TECH...

"Soon these tiny robots may be ready for clinical trials..."

Did I just read that correctly? Soon? Clinical Trials? P L E A S E... This is the exact same device / mechanism that can not only be inserted, pre - programmed to address certain physical maladies but perform those activities, rather flawlessly, until the machinery naturally begins to break down- as all things mechanical do. This artificially intelligent / conscious little critter was what kept me alive, for the better part of two decades: auto accident / 1989- severe frontal lobe damage, cracked skull, broken jaws, smashed nose, twisted spine, and several other internal grotesqueries. God love "Scientific American" for actually reporting on such matters. But, this is just the latter end of a 30 year conditioning cycle to make this tech seem like the next burgeoning field in certain medical circles: its been practiced for ages, though; on those where victories can be championed, they were and defeats- redacted. The side effects were a bitch goddess, but all things considered, you will not get a complaint out of me: I packed 50 lifetimes of experiences into those 20 years of borrowed time.

The Southern Negev Desert: Litterally a Hive For Current Renewable Energy Research

Israel’s Bedouin Want Their Rightful Share of the Sun

Karin Kloosterman | July 25, 2010 – 2:56 am

It would create jobs and better dividends for the marginalized Bedouin in Israel’s Negev Desert. So will the Israeli Government allot a lease-land quota for solar energy on Bedouin-settled land?

Arava Power, based on an Israeli kibbutz, recently signed a solar energy land lease deal with Israeli Bedouin (previously nomadic people). The deal, it seems has prompted the Bedouin to want a bigger or guaranteed share in Israel’s solar energy land lease market. According to the Jerusalem Post the Bedouin city of Rahat and its Mayor Sheikh Faiz Abu Seheban called a press conference last Thursday to publicize his community’s intentions to the Israeli government. “I sent a letter asking for a special quota of solar energy specifically for Beduin,” the mayor said. Should the Bedouin get it?

“Entering the solar energy market would create jobs for Beduin residents and save on electricity. The Beduin are the poorest community in Israel,” he added. The Beduin would lease their land to private solar developers and would work at the solar fields.

The Israeli government has plans to have 10% of its country’s energy to be from renewable sources by 2020, and has since guaranteed attractive feed-in tariffs for medium-sized projects attracting international investment and interest. Clearly the Bedouin people in Israel are no chumps. They want a share in the solar energy gold rush. Since land-rights issues for the Bedouin are still a very dodgy issue in Israel, we can foresee this topic being a very political one.

We are also concerned how these land-leases will be managed. BrightSource has already learned that it can’t just put up solar panels wherever it pleases in the Mojave Desert. Similar restrictions should be put in place in Israel’s somewhat small Negev Desert.

A word to the wise regarding this likely partnership - plan for every conceivable negative contingency (positive as well)- in detail- while strategies to the business underpinnings of your endeavor(s) are being formulated. Those decades old, simmering emotions, centuries old- at times-  pertaining to land rights', etc., have an uncanny way of manifesting right in the middle of very auspicious times for all involved.

Duly note, though, a competent crew should already be on the ground and saturating the media (air / radio) waves regarding constant project updates, routine regional gatherings, making the technology understandable to any and all lay persons along the energy continuum, questions being met, timetables proffered, payments schemes being explaned and adhered to (and having already begun the offering of free certifications and vocational education skills to the native peoples where repair and maintenance of the pannels and grid troubleshooting is concerned); project a long term, confident, trusting attitude; inspire, above all...

i n s p i r e.

A bit of reciprocity goes a long way. Helping a man's station in life (without lording it over him) will gain you an insight toward more commonalities than disparities- any day of the week. Lets stay positive, now. We are all we have left - each other- community. If community is ever proven to be a sham, a ruse, an artifice - we are all screwed... lp

RE: Kristiane Backer / Inspired by Muhammad Campaign; June 7, 2010 (GP)

Hello, Prophets...

Thank you so very much for the kindness, attentiveness and interest afforded me this morning. Please know that in spite of my rambling, unorthodox, unpolished presentation skills, I will try my best to make this commentary properly hopeful. Geography, history, leadership, party affiliations, economic systems and advantages that we traditionally tend to base the concept of success upon are marginal at best; illusory at their worst. Community relationships, the cohesion amongst citizens are the benchmarks by which to measure the genuine well-being of any given area: choosing to be accountable, creating contexts of hospitality and possibility, these are the actions that bring the gifts of those on the margins to the center; this is power; through community, your caring for one another - to include the environmental efforts and choices within everyone's lifelong ebb and flow - brings forth what is desired. That's the essence and impetus behind this email today. Once that reality is internalized and honestly contemplated, a heavy heart takes flight. The word risk is an early Italian derivative of the term "risicare"; in this particular sense, the intent is - to dare; applicable to the actions we dare to take, which in turn define our very humanity. For Pete's sake, kingdoms have ascended to greatness, only to descend into the dustbin of history, while flat earth hypotheses, Fibonacci sequences, the wonders afforded by (zero) and planetary orbits were argued over. These were just ideas being bandied about which spanned centuries. Place those mental olympics against the all too real scarcities and conflicts of today, and one sees that this proposal, this process could be quite lengthy; but what a great first step if indeed this concept is successful. No, not great; stupendous is a bit more apropos. I would sincerely love to know from someone actually in the region - is this initiative pure naivete? Is anyone, a certain percentage of the population, perhaps, receptive whatsoever? Is this seen as a nascent, outsider organization sugar-coating a deeply divisive situation for fame or monetary gain, or, is it being taken seriously at all, giving thought to its outcomes the gravity it deserves? Answers of that sort are what would interest me greatly. As you know, the "volunteer" state is my home of record in the US - Tennessee; and at this very moment, I am typing only a few miles from where Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated in 1968. The imagery from that tragic day will be with me forever; although I was not born until the following year; its as though all which that act symbolized - attempting to squash racial equality, living wages, adequate housing, proper educations and social justice - is within every Memphian's very DNA, yet, in reverse. Over time, that one act of cowardice on behalf of James Earl Ray has actually brought the aptitudes and understanding between cultures to a higher ground. I know these to be points of contention in your area of the globe, too. An initiative of some sort failing is part of the human condition;
conversely, allowing for catastrophe via inaction or negligence is patently outrageous. Let's all do the right thing, neither for a certain leader or sects advancement / hedgemony - but because it is that and that alone: right.

Peace, my friends...

Alaska Town Eyes Shipping Water Abroad

Alaska and Globalization.

len_pipkin_July 2, 2010, 12:34 p.m. ET

Having spent my fair share of years in numerous "renewable energy" continuums around the US, from initial testing and diagnostics of regionally indigenous source possibilities to the finality of actually placing energy onto various grids- to include testing several forms of hydro-wind technologies in Alaska- the selling off of fresh water supplies has never crossed my mind. I suppose I was too narrowly focused on wind / geo-thermal while living and working there with both governmental and NGOs. I'll grant you that the idea itself, in context, in theory, is sure to set off an obvious frenzy for potential customers in the middle east; there are areas, here, in the US where locals are already peering into their crystal ball and are at their wits end over the ultimate scarcity of fresh water; the realities there, in the deserts of the middle east, are much more dire, exponentially so - I can not even fully comprehend how serious conditions must be in certain arid climates at this exact moment in time. Where all things are concerned, always, in all ways, I try my best to be the ultimate optimist, though, ever tempered by a healthy dose of objectivity. And it is here where I shall dampen the parade a bit using a segue into a germane irresistible force vs the immovable object debate: Alaska and Globalization. Superficially, what could be more elementary? A supply meeting a demand quite harmoniously; and not just that - but these positives, both immediate and long term, emerging (i.e.) freer movement of goods, services and ideas; rapid evolutions in technology and capacity building among developing countries; surges in multinational business growth, an upswing in organizations dedicated to restoring world wide eco-systems and fostering higher standards of social justice are just a few of the auspicious possible inevitabilities. Yet where Alaska is concerned, although it is an American state / US territory, the numerous native American tribes and regional councils' are, in actuality, sovereign nations unto themselves. I know it sounds counter-intuitive to outsiders, but its a fact; Alaska being in the union is having to admit that within its boundaries there are dozens of nations within a nation. Additionally, the council leaders upon these ancient tracts of land, have the authority to- for lack of a better term- pick and choose what laws they and their people choose to abide by and those they do not agree with. Generally speaking, the federal government lets or allows this policy to continue for multiple reasons; Some quite valid and just, others a bit skewed and to appease. Suffice it to say, though, that when a dollar is to be made, much less hundreds of thousands if not more (millions) - the Alaskans- in modern times- are their own worst enemy; rarely pulling together as a unified front to achieve an objective; instead, allowing tribal boundaries, ancient ill will and current power struggles to render amazing projects - dead on arrival. Its a shame; though sadly, very true. If anyone feels I have overstepped my authority to say such, please prove differently. Furs, timber, minerals, oil, gold, now water, have in the past, and will again in the future, bring out levels of growing divides, explosive disparities, class warfare, insecurities, governmental vacuums and deep unrests that have to be seen to be believed where inner-state supremacy is the issue. Survivability is the natives forte, not game theory, where many an initiative, now in the dustbin of history, was anything but a zero-sum gain: all would have benefited greatly. For what its worth, there is a highly possible opportunity for the betterment of all involved in this instance; we could even say probable once the sheer logistics are worked out. From experience and knowledge of the state, I will not go so far as saying the final outcome is certain success; I will leave that to hopes of a blessed tomorrow. In the interim, those living in the middle east should plan on this rectifying things for a while. Ditto for those in Sitka and the various and sundry, cottage industries this will spawn. During said phase, though, (before the inevitable implosion within Alaska's own infrastructure), I strongly suggest large sums of financial resources (oil monies) be invested into various research and development modules. There are already many in the pipeline where their impending losses of resources are the issue (one example - think 'biomimicry'). To the leadership in and around Sitka, truly Stand and Lead; this could be the defining moment in your state's magical yet maddening policy formation history. Show how all can benefit, even short term, from such an endeavor: the product, the logistics, the transportation, the construction of necessary facilities and infrastructure - all - contractually going to Alaskan companies. Consider this occurring during "stoppage time" to use "World Cup" Terminology; my sincerest hope is that all use these next few climatological minutes wisely! I adore Alaska and its people - if just pains me to see them, at times act against their better judgment. Moreover, the inhabitants of the middle east are to be greatly admired and their ecological crises are rightfully to be worried about and solutions proposed. To the Alaskans: get your petty differences / your house in order. To the inhabitants of the Middle East proper: assess / trust / invest in tomorrow. To all: employ vision over mere sight / be adaptable / give more than you take regardless of the currency - fiduciary, intellectual, spiritual...

A deep peace to everyone,

Earth and Water

Re: June 20 “Groundwater Resources Drying Up” …

As a natural resource taken for granted, nothing could more apparent than the ground we trod upon daily. Currently, more than 6 billion people are dependent upon foodstuffs grown on just 11 percent of global terra firma. Even less terrain — a scant 3 percent of the Earth’s shell — offers inherently fertile soil.

Soil degradation can transmute production zones into wastelands with disastrous speed. Moreover, as a chemical compound, is there anything simpler than water? A mere two atoms of hydrogen joined to one of oxygen. From a human standpoint, though, specifically to the agricultural specialists in the area, this simplicity is foreshadowing an inexorable scarcity.

While true, water covers approximately 97 percent of our planet’s aggregate mass. Unfortunately, its high level of salinity makes it conventionally useless. An additional 2 percent is fresh water presently in the varied states of snow and ice. Many esteemed journals claim that within the next 10 to 15 years, close to 1.7 billion people will live in extremely arid conditions where water is not just in short supply, but altogether nonexistent. Rest assured, if regional activities remain unchecked, those within government will gleefully step in to render their ounce of flesh via multi-layered regulations.

Satisfyingly, this is one of those crossroads in my field of sustainability, where stakeholders can collaboratively make necessary changes, enabling Arkansas to remain a stalwart rice producer. Residents may not get the degree of water desired at any given time, but taking the soft path of outreach, education, comprehensive approaches, prudent conservation, efficient usage, community scale infrastructure and self management at watershed levels always seems a much more preferable discretion.

I recently started a lecturing campaign relevant to a pioneering quarter in planetary, physical sciences called “Biomimicry.” This endeavor will soon take me to both Israel and Kuwait in an attempt to dissuade armed conflict over resource depletion; please follow the erudite lead of the two ASU scholars featured in last Sunday’s Jonesboro Sun. How you ponder, exhaust and oversee our fresh water supply should perpetually be uppermost in mind.

Greetings, my friends,

These brief comments are in response to a recent article, "Project looks to create
green agriculture economy in Bootheel"; date, Jun 15, 2010; within the Southeast
Missourian; byline, By Michelle Felter...

External contexts change, but rules, for the most part, do not. Inertia within
conventional wisdom does not’t transform simply because rationale for it has
disappeared. In times of great need, however, fresh ideas
invariably manifest among the sagacious- those keeping a discerning eye on future
outcomes promoting local, self-reliance.

Thankfully, I feel this to be one of the aforementioned moments; moreover, I am
tickled pink that one my hometown's stellar bio-firms is taking the initiative in
this endeavor!

Local self-reliance has three cornerstones: authority, responsibility, capacity.
Does local self-reliance embolden parochialism and insularity? Absolutely not!
Self-confident societies, like poised persons, are better suited to deal with
“others” and the unfamiliar.

Indeed, one could posit a future defined by two metaphors: a global village and a
globe of villages. The global village is based on the exchange of information and
products. The globe of villages is predicated on the decentralized extraction and
processing of raw materials into finished products. Its one world of information,
but many smaller worlds of production. That’s a sane way to balance our strivings
for Earthly interconnectedness and local, community sustainability.

The flexible, pragmatic solutions within the inherent accountability of involved
shareholders, that wondrous vision that should be attractive to people irrespective
of political persuasions- if only they could
see past slogans, clichés and ulterior motives, is - altruism at its finest.

There’s tangible evidence, now, that many are acting accordingly. I am very proud of
those in seats of authority within the bootheel who are taking these first, nascent
steps toward agricultural sustainability, and equally, if not more so, of the
Memphis Bioworks Foundation for possessing the acumen, scientific rigor, outreach
aptitudes, and overall chutzpah for desiring substantive change - unlike so many
others from all walks of life who shield themselves behind the artifice of "green"
marketing.

'Me thinks we very well could have a sleeping giant on our hands, here, in several
cardinal sectors; and speaking of hands, put yours together with me, now, and give
resounding applause to a local firm that is indeed, worthy of such accolades.

What a week: busy, busy, busy. On the Environmental front alone, having interviews, op ed pieces, blogs, letters to the editors, etc featured in The Commercial Appeal (the Sierra Club), The Jonesboro Sun (the regional aquifer running dry / portending governmental intervention and fiduciary taxation / regulation), The Green Prophet (biomimicry), National Geographic (Alaska and Globalization), Eco-Localizer (calling for Federal Judge Martin Feldman's back-side, robe, gavel and atrophied brain to be removed from the bench) and the SE Missourian (in praise of their area farmers forward thinking regarding agri-business models /  the use of Memphis' own Bioworks Foundation to help their achievement of such aspirations) - moreover, my presentations to be given in, fingers crossed, Kuwait / Israel are coming together smoothly.

Whew...

I'll be in Memphis for the better part of the upcoming week (some rooftop construction classes planned); also, it will be my daughters first, "whole week during the summer at their grandmother's" house; sans mom; dad, staying on the scene - lurking in the shadows just in case the dynamic duo decide upon hog-tying Mimi, throwing her in the closet, grabbing the car keys - and going for a joy-ride.

In those instances, I'll be there to restore the balance.

Soon afterwards the clan is headed to Hot Springs, Arkansas for a bit. I am not sure on the exact dates, yet, but I'll keep all posted as to my whereabouts and how to contact me.

Until then, keep on rockin' in the free world,

...decades after 'the flash'...

PS: one last thing before departing for the evening; a movie suggestion, "The Book of Eli". Trust me, this isn't your grand-dad's / post-apocalyptic flick; details and back story are revealed, piecemeal, as its watched over the course of a week or so; do a bit of home work on the basis of the film (the graphic novels) AFTER the initial watch; then, honestly search the multiple layers of storytelling here, the subtle visual clues provided, the powerful nuance. With each viewing, additional factoids are provided based upon the previous encounter; no two screenings are alike; nor could they be; as viewer, you have quite different perspectives, from micro to macro, character to character relations, psychological machinations on display each and every time the movie is watched. When I genuinely sink my teeth into a production, I generally dissect it to absurd extremes- at times to my amazement, others to my chagrin; this most assuredly falls into the former category. I'll proffer one clue -  its a very, very gestalt endeavor: you'll.... see... what I mean!

Example(s): things may not always be as they appear

PS: ...excellent casting regarding the two leads (Washington, Oldham); always a pleasure to see (J. Beals); (M. Kunis) comes of age; haunting cinematography; enjoyable twists and turns; curious tweaks to tired, uninspired contemporaries in the genre'; and, an Al Green tune on the soundtrack, too... most definately two thumbs way up...

Lastly, regarding Mr Green's contribution: 40 years later and, still, no ones provided an adequate answer to how a broken heart is mended; perhaps thats encoded within the movie as well (?)...

Even with temperatures sweltering around 100 degrees (f), with a humidity so sticky and oppressive you could cut it with a knife- a quite decent showing made their way to the demonstration on the bluffs. On hand were concerned citizenry, inspired youth, sage elders- a wide, age range of stakeholders with varied occupational histories - multi-racial, inter-generational, and knowledgeable as hell.

Moreover, representatives from our most prominent media outlet were in attendance -
so please keep your eyes and ears tuned to some impending auspicious  coverage... all things considered, I was honored to be there, and even more so - beaming with pride - to call Memphis my home.

Little Boxes, circa 1962, by Malvina Reynolds

(the original score to, Weeds, starring Mary Louise Parker - season 1)

This is the greatest anti-establishment, anti-conformity ditty of all-time; no rage, no threats; no violent protests, no intimations toward uprisings... nope, just a harmless granny and her guitar - sitting beside a metaphorical camp-fire - cleverly doling out more wisdom, freely, in song, than one could ever hope to acquire, retain then disseminate - irrespective of how many years spent at their beloved universities + the many "credentials" they placed after their surname; as they entered the "real world" and felt the creeping realization...

neither were they in Kansas anymore... nor, could they even remember who they truly were...

August 23, 1900 was the day of her birth; this August 23, I plan to watch every episode of the aforementioned "Showtime" cult classic, while listening to her timeless tune 110 times over the course of the afternoon!

Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,

And a blue one & a yellow one
And they are all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses
All went to the university
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same
And theres doctors & lawyers
And business executives
And they are all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they´re put in boxes
And they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business
And marry & raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same,

Rash and heavy handed? 'Beg pardon, your Honor? If I may request something of you, it would simply be this: leave your penchant for inductive logic and reasoning at you personal residence; or better yet, to the antiquated, yellowed pages of your Sherlock Holmes series of children's novels. My god, drop the megalomania trip you're on and welcome to the real world. What unadulterated arrogance to be so deluded that the mere fact you adorn yourself in silky, black robes each day that somehow- that act in an of itself- has rendered you beyond reproach at best, infallible at worst.

The cities, counties and states - to include the organizations that reside therein - that truly lead in the acute and profound changes starting now to unfold around the globe, who do not get needlessly mired in the mindset of just being “less deleterious and toxic to our environment” will be those vanguards who convert extant sustainability challenges into compelling and considered opportunities.

These will be the pioneers that coin and fashion the truly novel initiatives and stratagems, the fresh business models, the innovative energy infrastructures, as well as, the visionary management practices and organizational mores so very needed at this defining juncture of our numerous national crises.

Operating in a shared orientation is neither magical nor mystical. It is simply an alignment of the personal and the professional, of people working at their unsurpassed best; passionate, steadfast, yet selflessly being guardians for a propitious future, many aspects, though, of which those toiling daily will never glimpse. The benefits of such efforts are as large as you dare to dream; sadly, it appears as though you dream no more- pitiful comments from an obvious atrophied brain.

Playing "politics" with an ecosystem of our species, their livelihoods, their children and extended families; the indigenous flora and fauna of said region - fully cognizant of the literal decades it may take to achieve a modicum or normalcy once again- is truly a crime against humanity. FYI: if they ever call me for jury duty regarding this egregious act of yours to include your callous and infantile series of statements- you shall rejoice if for no other reason than you do not dream at this juncture; because one man's pleasant night sleep could and would be another's horrifying nightmare... I'll allow you to be the "judge" in applying your failing IQ to that scenario.

Killing In The Name Of… Water (In Iraq)

Study Shows Haves and Have-Nots in World Water Supply

by Jaymi Heimbuch, San Francisco, California
"Journal of Science & Technology"; reprinted in TREEHUGGER

All the forecasts about water causing the next major Middle East conflict has started. An Iraqi government employee in the irrigation department, along with his family, are murdered – over water.

In the early hours of 18 June, gunmen broke into Faisal Hassan’s west Baghdad home killing him, his wife and their two young children. The motive was not sectarian, political or even economic – but water-related.

Forty-year-old Hasan was an employee of a local irrigation department in Abu Ghraib city – 32km west of Baghdad and famed in recent times for scandals surrounding its prison. The department he worked for supervised government water distribution to farmland in and around Abu Ghraib.

His death brings the number of irrigation department employees killed in this city to three in the past three months, Mohammed Khudhair, a police investigator, said. “All these employees had nothing to do with politics or anti-militant activities, but instead were victims of the nature of their work, which has become a risky one,” he said.

    Risk of local feuds

In Iraq’s rural areas, traditional tribes and clans hold much sway and often attract stronger loyalty from members than the national government. Clans have clashed in the past over land resources and water, but with the absence of a strong government since 2003 and the decline in water supplies in recent years, analysts say local water feuds are on the rise and risk becoming armed conflicts.

Government officials can’t control the regulation of irrigation and stop those who violate their regulations either because of corruption or because they fear for their lives. So we have to solve this issue ourselves.

“Today, we don’t have a fully functioning government as it is totally preoccupied by the security situation and political wrangling so we don’t have a strong role to deter any possible widespread conflict,” Karbala-based analyst Jaafar Moahmmed Ali said. “Besides, we have an acute shortage of water nationwide and a very bad economic situation that makes it very hard for farmers to do other work.”

Tribal sheikh Ali Ismael al-Zubaidi from Diwaniya Governorate, about 200 km south of Baghdad, said he had been having “tough negotiations” over water allocations with another tribe that lives upstream from his.

“We have daily problems with water. They are siphoning water with huge electric water pumps and leave only drops for us,” al-Zubaidi said. “Government officials can’t control the regulation of irrigation and stop those who violate their regulations either because of corruption or because they fear for their lives. So we have to solve this issue ourselves.”

Al-Zubaidi said he needed to hold more meetings with the upstream tribe to resolve the water dispute “but that doesn’t mean that we can wait a long time. We will act swiftly to secure the water we need for our land even if we have to take up weapons.”

    Water-scarce nation

Historically, Iraq has been one of the more fertile nations in the region, thanks largely to th
e Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which flow southeasterly through the entire nation. There used to be a thick, green ribbon of fertile land snaking through the middle of the country, fed by the two rivers.

However, in recent years water levels in the Euphrates and Tigris have steadily fallen due to below-average rainfall and the construction of dams on the rivers in neighbouring Turkey and Syria.

In addition, the country’s agricultural sector has been paralysed by decades of war and insecurity, underinvestment and the unchecked felling of trees for firewood, which has increased soil salinity and caused desertification in some areas. Large tracts of once fertile agricultural land have been transformed into semi-arid desert and are causing an increasing number of sandstorms as soil-binding plants shrivel up.

In response, the government has adopted measures to regulate the amount of water being used for irrigation in each province but has faced difficulties implementing them.

“The farmers didn’t adhere to the water distribution regulations. We advise them to follow the regulations this year because we cannot guarantee the amount of water we’ll have,” Mahdi al-Qaisi, undersecretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, told IRIN, the United Nations news source.

    Hello, all,

Awesome insights; as, equally awesome (in scope) eco disasters looming just over the horizon.

FYI: I am being sent to both Kuwait and Israel in October and November of this year (speaking engagements / energy conferences / sometime time spent living and working within a kibbutz) to attempt in abating escalating conflicts over depletion of natural resources, particularly water. This will be done under the auspices of a truly revolutionary sector in earth / physical sciences- called biomimicry…

Goggle the subject. Its mind-blowing; finding patterns within nature, in any given clime or locale, and via engineering and physics insights- building structures to mimic the mysteries of flora and fauna in any global; region to literally “mimic” their adaptation mechanisms of survival. These efforts will lead to how natural resources can and will be collected, stored, utilized, exhausted and managed in a very near future.

As the water sources in the middle-east vanish with startling speed, I hope to bring former enemies to the table where fiduciary obligations, cosmic ingenuity and a humanistic desires for their respective cultures to, ultimately, survive / win the day…

    Fascinating.

Green and Sustainable Community Planning; or,
Successful Environmental Planning and Management will be my two primary avenues of approach.

Example: Since I will be initiating my lecture(s) in Kuwait, this is a model of the type of academic abstract allowing you an entrance into a foreign land to present your aims and goals- irrespective of how futuristic they may seem at this exact moment in time: the attainment of goals implies action; action implies field work, research, writing, power-point presentations, micro to macro thought, the nurturing of human(e) connections, etc.; if you want to be that proverbial “change” so ubiquitous in our sector’s lexicon to truly manifest itself- Its worth it!!!

    Sample Abstract

“This paper extends Biomimicry research and development endeavors while addressing Kuwait’s arid climate and inexorably approaching resource capacity crises. I first generalize the complexities Biomimicry targets in relation to multi-dimensional energy and water veracities. Then, using the extant array of contextual mitigation options, I construct definitively layered applications oriented against an inert status quo; synergistic, risk aversions which allow for a symbiotic financial, social and environmental mutualism. These hypotheses will be computed efficiently using a sustainability charter consisting of governmental, business, and educational assets. The working demonstrations I will proffer, illustrative of urban sustainable best practices, will foreshadow a neo Islamic Renaissance within varied scientific and cultural quarters. Upon these progressive sector matrixes, may all Kuwaitis witness their past genius manifest again within an organically sane prologue”.

Send me some positive energy when its possible; I will need all you, collectively, can spare quite shortly.

Dream big and far and wide, my brothers and sisters; or not at all…

    Respectfully,

    Len Pipkin

"Honey Is Bittersweet In The Middle East"

link to recent articles / below my commentary, awaiting moderation...

A much needed food / farming program informs, empowers and provides resources to producers and buyers; makes connections between farmers, institutions, retailers and restaurants; and, raises public awareness and support of local farms and eating locally via outreach programs at every level of the educational continuum.

Increasing the share of agricultural products consumed locally that are produced locally while bolstering the number, diversity, prosperity and sustainability of local agricultural producers can be accomplished through a multitude of  programs (providing incentives and tools for consumers to support the art of feeding themselves from a place and a community); stressing the inter-connectedness of all peoples, floura / fauna, and natural resources thereby exhibiting how the life cycle of their meals organically originate (via a targeted / marketing development plan); to, indeed, growing a sustainable, resilient food system and bringing more local foods into not only the existing marketplaces, but various and sundry others, sure to follow (hence, creating strong business to business trade relationships built upon the underpinnings of trust, reciprocity and service to the greater good).

At the proverbial end of the day, though, all involved in any element or phase of the agricultural process must understand, unequivocally, that the corner stone to definitive success is to be found within the Apiary Sciences: without pollination, civilization and the social mores you enjoy will cease to exist.

Please know that I am available, having much experience in these matters, to assist any individual or official organization per their request. Simply ask. I have numerous materials at hand and do quite a bit of public speaking / renewable energy / urban agricultural demonstrations at this juncture throughout the southern United States; I would love nothing more than to help spread information on the importance of this insect so steeped in mystery and lore.

Be advised to whomever leads this endeavor, Colony Collapse Disorder is a stark reality; one that can lead to irrevocable, deleterious damage in any region's food chain; irrespective of global location. Need verses want; sight as opposed to vision; these are the types of questions to bring to the table as debate begins. I wish everyone in the region all the best. Again, should anyone like to converse with me pertaining to the implementation of a comprehensive model, my email address will be an addendum to this message.

"Take the Bus: Israeli MassTransit Challanges"

    June 17, 2010 at 6:08 pm

    Greetings,

Currently, my work schedule demands that I split time in two separate
cities, one being approximately 20 times the size of the other.
Irrespective of that rather glaring disparity in not only geographical
scale, but population density, innumerable similarities are extant.

Although in stark juxtaposition, it would seem logical that the issues at
hand pertaining to the usage of varying modes of public transportation in
such diametrically opposed sites – are a ludicrous proclamation - yet,
this letter is an urgent plea to my fellow citizens belonging to the
global league of nations – not to let a civic indecency (the eradication
of any said modes of transport) occur.

While true, sustainable transportation is often considered a wholly /
major metropolitan issue, a city such as my current hamlet- one poised on
the very threshold of becoming a regional beacon of environmental
economics- would be exhibiting an abject and utter lack of vision in
opposing not just the program’s continued viability but applying
    aggressive growth strategies, as well.

What is needed at this unique moment in time is a coordinated approach to
garnering wide support across local communities, a practical agenda
alleviating clogged roadways; conserving our natural resources; all the
while promoting and enacting fairness and social justice.

Moreover, the most powerful known tool, or lever, utilized by urban
planners in relation to a given area’s vibrancy is the placement and
health of its regional mass transit systems. There is an abundance of
empirical research to substantiate such claims over 25 to 50 year periods
of time. Generally, no greater determining factor exists regarding
cautious yet calculated land usage and the sober, well-judged placement of
community development, than does the sagacious locating of mass
    transportation capabilities.

Although smaller to rural communities undoubtedly face numerous, unique
transit challenges pertaining to their population, size and geographic
position, these present realities can actually be a policy advantage.
Ergo, now would be an auspicious time to use our relative size, here in a
more antiquated, agricultural area, and undeniable, regional, political
sway to show agility in decision making, policy creation and
modifications, partnership formations with area leaders throughout the
southeastern United States and visionary, yet pragmatic, implementation of
    public infrastructure.

Once we as a city get enough positive, ecologically sane trends headed in
the right direction, they will begin to organically reinforce one another.

One responsibility we all have is choice; choices that can and will
directly affect the lives of our children and their decedents alike. Yet
another responsibility we shoulder is to do all within our power to ensure
the future we leave to the aforementioned progeny is a new era worth
fighting for; and likewise, worth of our every effort to procure; this is
accomplished at the ballot box- via votes that challenge our elected
officials to genuinely address our collective concerns.

Just a few of these concerns being the transportation needs of an ever
growing, aging population; the ensuring of equal access to available
health care facilities: transport to jobs at the city / state / and
national levels; creating pathways to educational opportunities for those
interested, irrespective of age, in pursuing degrees, certifications and
credentials; and finally, as an enticement to attract and retain newer
families as employees and residents of this great municipality – who – as
a relative newcomer to the area myself- fears the local citizenry may
inadvertently stifle this explosive, yet untapped, hot-bed of creativity
and innovation by voting down mass transit initiatives that routinely
surface as predictable wedges during shamefully, vitriolic political
    discourses.

What any individual can do is limited without a team approach; optimum
outcomes need shared goodwill. Call now upon the proverbial, “better
angels of our nature”, as we – all, world-wide – stand and claim ownership
of our very lives and vigorously debate the implementation of further
policy resolutions that will either bear a hearty, future fruit, or,
eventuate in said bounty needlessly dying upon a withering vine-politic.

The future belongs to our children. It is incumbent upon those in seats of
authority to steward our resources wisely. Best practices forging a
sustainable tomorrow imply creative thought; creation itself implies
action. Let there be action. Tag, you're it; get busy...

    Bravo, Jack.

The polaroid photograph seen below is a literal / historical artifact; I could not believe that I located this today; after several moves, certain things have a way of simply vanishing! Due to the fragile, crumbling condition of the photo, I scanned it immediately for posting purposes. This shot was taken approximately 11 years ago. The reason that my wife, Sandie, and yours truly are wearing jumpers ladened with harnesses is because - just moments prior - we had leaped from an elevation of 14,000 feet, parachuting in Somerville, Tennessee. Not too shabby for a first date, eh? We were doubling with Carol B. and Bill J. from midtown Memphis. For those of you who do not know me, I have an affinity for tough hombres, not bullies mind you, but survivors. Those with the intestinal fortitude to protect the weak, not because they can, necessarily, but because its the just thing to do. Neither strong body nor strong mind takes preference; so long as actions justify the means. After seeing her front flip out of a perfectly good airplane and free-fall for several minutes, my search was over before it had truly began. Lord knows that I can be a grizzly bear to live with; particularly if the moon is full... we are not refererred to as "lunatics" haphazardly. That reality coupled with the fact that, after our first pregnancy together, I had her name tattooed on my right bicep in script so large both it and the great wall of China can be seen from space should emphatically state, "Sugar, rest assured, papa ain't a rolling stone...".

As my full-time occupational, educational and outreach endeavors, within Arkansas' energy fields, are drawing disconcertingly nigh: I feel it incumbent at this juncture to pass along to all my friends, business associates and sector colleagues - my warmest and unfeigned recommendation / my unwavering stamp of unconditional approval upon the brow of April Ambrose: Little Rock's finest. Her competencies, aptitudes, effectualness, qualifications and moxie are unsurpassed in all things environmental in nature. April is one of the very few professionals I have ever encountered the world over, with no ulterior motive guiding her actions; ethically sound; without bias; prudent; cogent, and right as rain! I have found that her head, heart and hands are all toiling in unison toward a future so bright, I seriously doubt many in-state can scarcely think her dreams a probability, much less unerringly certain. The State of Arkansas

Congrats to Senator Lincoln & Congressman Causey!!!

    Len,

I am pleased to announce that political analyst and former White House senior aide Paul Begala will be the keynote speaker at the Democratic Party of Arkansas (DPA) 2009 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner on Friday, July 24, 2009 at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock.

"This year's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner is an important opportunity to take stock of the accomplishments of Democrats in Arkansas as we prepare for the road ahead," said Governor Mike Beebe.  "Paul Begala is an enthusiastic national opinion leader who will rally our faithful as we gear up for next year's election campaigns."

From the White House Situation Room to CNN's news program of the same name, Begala's experience gives him unmatched perspective on politics and the media.  As a political strategist or pundit, he has been the center of every election cycle of the last 25 years.

Begala served as counselor to President Clinton in the White House, where he helped define and defend the Administration's agenda.  With James Carville he was a senior strategist for the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign.

In addition to Begala, this year's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner will feature Governor Beebe, U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representatives Marion Berry, Vic Snyder and Mike Ross.  Also participating in the evening's festivities will be Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, Secretary of State Charlie Daniels, Treasurer Martha Shoffner, Auditor Jim Wood, Commissioner of State Lands Mark Wilcox, Democratic state legislators, and many other distinguished Democrats.

I look forward to visiting with Democrats from across the state as we welcome Paul Begala back to Arkansas.  I know from my recent travels that our county committees, clubs, and Party auxiliaries are excited about the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner and the other events scheduled that weekend.  This is a time for Democrats to gather and honor the outstanding women and men who serve all Arkansans in elected office.

The Jefferson-Jackson Dinner is the highlight of a dynamic and busy two days of Democratic events and meetings.  Kicking off the festivities the Senior Democrats of Arkansas will have lunch and a regular business meeting on Friday, July 24, at the Whole Hog Café in Little Rock.  As the lights go down on the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, the Young Democrats of Arkansas will just be getting started as they play host to the second annual J-J After Dark.

Also at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner we will announce the 2009 Young Democrat and Democratic Woman and Man of the Year.  Nominations are being accepted for the Jeffrey Ledbetter, Gressie Carnes and Harold Jinks Awards.  All nominations are due by Monday, July 6.

On Saturday, July 25, the DPA will hold its third quarter state and executive committee meetings at the Wyndham Riverfront in North Little Rock.  Following the meetings will be a lunch provided by the Arkansas Regional Council of Carpenters.

For those traveling to central Arkansas for this event, reduced rate hotel room blocks have been reserved at the Wyndham, the Peabody, and the Holiday Inn Presidential hotels.  Please contact these hotels directly to reserve your room.

Please make it a point to join the Democratic Party of Arkansas for this weekend of celebration.  Tables and sponsorship opportunities are still available for J-J, for more information contact CDP Strategies at (501)537-0190 or

I recently escorted my youngest, Olivia, age 5, to a thrift store or two and helped her raid her grandmother's closet as well: result below. ***Does anyone remember the lead singer for 3 Non Blondes? I believe her name was Linda Perry. They had one hit in the states entitled Whats Up? If you recall the video for the song, you will immediately remember that Linda was a hat aficionado; I suppose Olivia is as well...

Busted! My eldest, Posey - age 7 - just saw me in the process of updating the website and immediately demanded to know why I had not already posted something, anything else, that pertained to her. So, she went through about 3000 photographs, and decided this was a flashback photo to be displayed. This was from, say, November of 2009; it was toward the end of the beekeeping season (harvesting the honey / maintenance on the hives). I had just returned home for the day and we were doing her homework together.

Since I will be out of the country later this year / and in conjunction with HBO's "TrueBlood" beginning its 3rd season this Sunday night - all of the local vamps, werewolfs, shape shifters and pedestrian creatures of the night are having our Halloween Party within the next 48 to 72 hours or so. After much thought, I decided upon being the scandalous Russian holy man of the late 1800s: Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (photo below; both his and my own; as you can see - I genuinely went for it this year; as soon as the bash ends I promise to become presentable once again - at this juncture, though, I am beginning to scare small children, have people cross the street if they find me in their path, etc...).

Welcome to my nightmare, I think you're gonna' like it, I think you're gonna' feel where you belong...

The term Renascence Man is tossed about so readily these days that it actually devalues the word's thrust and punch in the vast majority of instances. Not so in this case, my friends. Henry Rollins is the real deal. I have traveled the world; seen the wheat separated from the chaff. As Sinatra said:

    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
    A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
    And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself laying flat on my face,
I just pick myself up and get back in the race...

Well, so has yours truly, and Henry had a lot to do with that ability to doggedly persevere. Come get switched on, July 2nd, 2010, at Memphis' own New Daisy Theater.

Great photo of Keith / the LV guitar case; and check out the vid below from 1971 / Top of the Pops: Brown Sugar... A song still banned in several countries; and not because of matters such as human trafficking, slavery, misogyny and rape, but, inter racial "relations" in and of itself...

    How curious...

But nevertheless, a tune which continues to be heard in beer-joints and speak-easies the world over to this day; against that beat, those lyrics and Mick's "pimpin' aint easy" pink suit - resistance is futile...

For years now, family and friends have literally begged that I take a year or so off to write my memoirs - in either a fiction / narrative, or, a non fiction endeavor of candid realism. Well, pigs not only have started to take flight, but, rumors abound that Hell itself is undergoing a rather cold snap of late. Yes, Yes, Yes, names are being changed to protect the identities of the myriad lads and lasses involved in both my zeniths and nadirs of the past 25 years (which include stellar service to the nation via the USMC / teaching professionally / etc - intertwined with acts of unadulterated hedonism, death-wishes to outright social mores be damned anarchy...)

I'll keep everyone abreast of the progress; anyone's palms lightly sheathing with sweat as they read this?

An erstwhile neighbor from midtown Memphis, now residing in Fayetteville, Arkansas recently posted her reminiscings on the twenty some-odd years she lived there. Moreover, I am not ashamed in the least to admit crying like a baby while reading Sarah's tale. This is simply one of those unique cases where, you just had to have experienced life as a member of that eclectic train wreck, to truly, truly appreciate the longing one feels for that square mile or two after departure; and rest assured, her structured reflections - and the links provided - caused a wave of nostalgia to wash over me, so bittersweet, I remained stunned for quite a while after taking it all in. It was as though I was caught within a vivid dream; wondering if my tears were ones depictive of wistful youth, or, the emblematic loss of my own naiveté: both of which took place there as well. My pre-teens and the vast majority of my adult life (I am currently 40) transpired in that uncanny hamlet... Over time, I have lived in no less than 4 major cities, states, countries, continents; as well as 2 to 3 additional locales being in the most remote and horrid of conditions; and yet, I neither cease to ponder nor fail to return to midtown at some point. All my sojourns, invariably, as if by way of an inner compass, direct me back home. There, and only there, does my restlesness abate. Sarah is making a name for herself in NW Arkansas, as well she should, in the fields of journalism and photography. If that discourse is indicative of her talents, aptitudes and abilities - all contemporaries step aside - a skilled virtuoso walks in your midst; your collective asses are grass, and she's the lawn-mower!

Even though she looks to be joyfully content in the photos below, Mrs. Gill and her husband will, eventually, return to Memphis; everyone does, everyone...

This lady has an aura about her, folks, a palpable magnetism... enjoy Sarah's work; I can not adorn her neck with enough laurels of quality and worth...

Attention: regarding the abrupt halt, as seen above, to the The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test Restoration Road Show and Flea Circus. Well, it was placed upon an indefinite hiatus after the last jaunt to San Fransisco in 2009. It was at that time when the underpinnings of my entire empire collapsed: the banking industry, the mortgage industry and the insurance industry. Those within my circle fought the good fight, were promised financial bail-outs galore, yet, were ultimately left to die upon the withering vine. Instant Karma is a bitch; god help the clowns responsible for the chicanery once she bites their asses in the aggregate. Hubris, avarice and spineless actions are deplorable and will demand their ounce of flesh when the devil's bargain comes to its closure.

Au revoir, you pitiful old men; see you in hell...

A quick aside: while convalescing during my recent bed-rest, I made an effort to re watch some classic flicks and read some phenomenal books (listed below). All are quite fascinating, and, either quicken the pulse or cause the blood to run ice cold - depending on your vantage point!

    next,

Lucas Corso, middle-aged, tired, and cynical, is a book detective, a mercenary hired to hunt down rare editions for wealthy and unscrupulous clients. When a well-known bibliophile is found hanged, leaving behind part of the original manuscript of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers, Corso is brought in to authenticate the fragment. The task seems straightforward, but the unsuspecting Corso is soon drawn into a swirling plot involving devil worship, occult practices, and swashbuckling derring-do among a cast of characters bearing a suspicious resemblance to those of Dumass' masterpiece. Aided by a mysterious beauty named for a Conan Doyle heroine, Corso travels from Madrid to Toledo to Paris in pursuit of a sinister and seemingly omniscient killer. Part mystery, part puzzle, part witty intertextual game, The Club Dumas is a wholly original intellectual thriller by the internationally bestselling author of The Flanders Panel and The Seville Communion.

Hello, all. Similarly to an earlier event in 1897 when Mark Twain made his famous remark "The report of my death was an exaggeration", I too am now back on the good foot and feeling well. I will give the briefest of accounts to what has delayed my travel / occupational actions over the past several months- both recuperatively and in terms of personal medical vindication- then move forward to matters at hand in the coming days and weeks! During March of this year, I began to suffer Parkinson Disease like symptoms, to the acute degree of using a cane, being banned from operating an automobile, to utterly losing equilibrium, gait and ST Memory. I stepped in with assistance from friends in congress and what was implanted within- USMC circa 1989- (as those of you in the know were told) was indeed extracted at the Veterans Administation Regional Medical Center of Memphis. The process was several months in length, not to mention excruciatingly painful, but over it is, indeed. The remaining procedures are ones maintenance in nature- MRI, etc- to see if and when any of the cranial bolts, screws, pins and plates need a bit of a tune up. So, join me in a monumental exhale... thank you... let's begin, again, shall we?

    World Without Oil

Please tell me that I wasn't the only, lone soul watching this hypothetical scenario
    unfold last evening. Each segment was a form of mental conditioning to the extreme;
though, not extreme enough.  To my knowledge, it was the first show of its type to take realities and
scenarios not just from a hindsight / Monday morning "quarterbacking" analysis
perspective / and tie things together, at every conceivable level, local to global,
backyards on Terra Firma to breaking the confines of gravity's pull; no, cogent solutions were detailed... initiatives well underway to help any unforeseen calamity be less deleterious to our kind. I have railed for years that vision was needed over sight; and where
sustainability is the issue at hand - its a matter of inspiration over conservation.
ALWAYS. The impending crises are easy enough to forecast; how about focusing on
positive ends, auspicious game theories, etc. all the while infusing some much needed positivity back into our ponderous doom and gloom prophecies.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing the Glasgow family for the first time / long time; Kerri was my two daughter's first nanny, our next door neighbor, gentle spirited, my personal assistant, the family's interior decorator, objective 3rd party, organizational specialist, kind souled, vegan, yoga instructing everything! An amazing gal; and her husbands pretty darned great, too. Now - they - have a baby, and we are about 90 minutes away from them / our former home in midtown; 5 years later and Kerri and I still get misty eyed and are on the verge of tears whenever we discuss the move to Arkansas. Yes, I know, generally speaking, the space time continuum is a linear perception, the ebb and flow of things being forward in nature, though, I also know a part of me stayed behind when we departed Memphis - a hole that hasn't been filled since that occurrence. Never let anyone say being thin-skinned is an inauspicious trait, either, my dear, for thats why we got along so swimmingly; after stripping away all superficial nonsense - some things really matter and are worth getting a bit politely ill tempered about! xoxo...

    http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount_vantage/blacksnakemoan/

    by Roger Ebert

I had never really heard many half-snorts before. Snorts, yes, and silence. But what do you make of an audience that has no idea how to react? "Black Snake Moan" is the oddest, most peculiar movie I've seen about sex and race and redemption in the Deep South. It may be the most peculiar recent movie ever except for "Road House," but then what can you say about "Road House"? Such movies defy all categories.

The movie -- I will try to be concise -- stars Samuel L. Jackson as a broken-down blues musician and vegetable market gardener whose wife has just walked out. On the road leading to his property he finds the battered body of a young white girl, whose injuries hardly seem curable by the cough syrup he barters fresh vegetables for at the drugstore. The girl is Rae (Christina Ricci); it is no coincidence that Jackson's character is named Lazarus, and Lazarus determines to return her from near death or whooping cough, one or the other. No saint himself, he wants to redeem her from a life of sluttery.

His technique, with a refreshing directness, is to chain her to a radiator. Good thing he lives way out in the wilderness. Lazarus and Rae have no sex per se, but they do a powerful lot of slapping, cursing and chain-rattling, and the reaction of the blue-collar town on Market Day is a study. I think the point is that Lazarus and Rae somehow redeem each other through these grotesqueries, a method I always urge be used with extreme caution.

The performances are very good: Hell-bent for leather, and better than the material deserves, there is much hysteria and snot. The writer-director, Craig Brewer, made that other splendid story of prostitution and redemption, "Hustle & Flow," with its Oscar-winning song ("It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp") In fact, I pretty much enjoyed the whole movie, with some incredulity and a few half-snorts.

Both "Black Snake Moan" and "Hustle & Flow" are about neglected characters living on the fringe who find a healing in each other. Both movies use a great deal of music to illustrate the souls of their characters.

We sense that the girl has never been treated other than in a beastly manner, and that the man, having lost his wife, is determined not to allow sex to betray his instincts to do good. Yes, I think it is probably against the law to chain a drifter to a radiator, but in a sense these people exist outside the law, society and common or any kind of sense. Their society consists of the usual locals who seem clueless and remarkably unobservant, leading to remarkable non sequiturs.

There is another woman, the middle-aged pharmacist named Angela, played by the sweet S. Epatha Merkerson, to provide Lazarus an alternative to a life of sluts and tramps. But, as for Rae -- well, I gather that when compulsive nymphomania passes a certain point, you're simply lost.

After Rae says goodbye to her boyfriend Ronnie (played by pop star Justin Timberlake), who has enlisted in the service for cloudy reasons, she immediately falls to the ground and starts writhing as if under attack by fire ants. This is her way of conveying uncontrollable, orgiastic need. A girl that needy, you'd approach like Miss RoboCop.

I love the way that both Samuel Jackson and Christina Ricci take chances like this, and the way that Brewer creates characters of unbelievable forbearance, like Ronnie, who is in a more or less constant state of panic attacks and compulsion. And I like the understated way the rural Tennessee locations are used. You have never seen a movie like this before. Then again, you may not hope to. Some good blues music helps carry the day.

I heard some days after the screening that Jackson considers this his best performance. Well, maybe it is. He disappears into the role, and a good performance requires energy, daring, courage and intensity, which he supplies in abundance. Few actors could accomplish work at this level with this screenplay. As for Christina Ricci, she is the right actor for this role; she embodies this poor, mixed-up creature and lets you experience both her pain and her hope. Her work defines the boundaries of the thankless.

Reaction to President Obama’s State of the Union Address: Top Priority Must Be Strengthening Economy, Job Creation...

    (please follow video stream...)

    http://www.youtube.com/SenatorLincoln

I am pleased that tonight the President expressed he shares my top priority: getting
our economy back on track so businesses are creating more jobs for hardworking
Americans. I hope that he will work with Congress over the next year to stay focused
on this critical goal. Since the financial markets collapsed in late 2008 and
triggered an economic recession, we have worked hard to pull the country out of the
ditch, but Arkansans and Americans are still struggling to find employment and
recover a sense of financial security that they enjoyed before 2008.

I believe there are a number of outstanding measures that could provide the tools
and incentives to the private sector to maintain or create new jobs and produce a
favorable economic climate for Arkansans to prosper. We need to pass the highway
bill and the FAA bill, legislation that would provide stability to spur investments
and create jobs. I support sending the President the bipartisan, clean energy
legislation that was produced by the Senate Energy Committee. This bill, coupled
with energy tax incentives, would reduce our dependence on foreign oil and
incentivize renewable energy, all while improving the environment and creating
    much-needed jobs.

I am committed to working with the President and my colleagues on both sides of the
aisle to reduce the national deficit and find responsible ways to cut government
spending. This was also a goal of mine throughout the debate on health insurance
reform where we identified $700 billion in waste, fraud, abuse and other
inefficiencies in our health care system.

The discretionary spending freeze advocated by the President can help us reduce the
deficit, but we must ensure the burden is shared equitably across all government
programs. In addition, I believe the President’s commitment to form a debt reduction
commission is important to getting our nation’s fiscal house back in order. I voted
for the creation of such a commission, and I hope we are able to find a way to move
forward on this initiative this year.

I was pleased to hear the President express his commitment to reforming our nation’s
financial systems. As Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I am currently
working with Ranking Member Chambliss and the Banking Committee to produce a
bipartisan bill that puts the necessary safeguards in place to restore confidence in
America’s financial system.  My goal is to require much-needed oversight and
transparency in our financial markets so consumers and businesses across Arkansas
will invest in our economy and in their future growth. We must also embrace new
innovations that will allow us to be a leader in financial markets as we move into
    the global economy.

I share the President’s commitment to strengthening education though additional
investment and reforms. Preparing our future generations for well-paying careers is
critical to our nation’s security and our economic health.

Throughout my entire career, I have worked diligently to provide tax relief for
Arkansas’s hard working families and small businesses, and I was pleased to hear the
President reaffirm his commitment to doing the same.

I hope that our efforts in the next year will be truly bipartisan, because the
high-pitched, partisan tone in Washington is not creating jobs, nor is it solving
the health care challenges facing every American, whether it be cost or access. I
believe the American people want us to come together and find common ground to solve
the many challenges facing this country.

I remain committed to fighting for Arkansas’s hardworking families, small
businesses, and rural communities above all else.

    With Arkansas Pride,
    Blanche L. Lincoln

Various EPA Brownfields / Alaskan consulting jobs planned over the next decade:

Article: Jonesboro Sun; Reporter: Mrs. Karin Hill

Eco-friendly area resident heads to Alaska

    By Karin Hill

JONESBORO — A Jonesboro businessman with a penchant for science, adventure and saving the planet is picking up and moving to Alaska, where his new job description should satisfy all three of those interests — and many more.

Len Pipkin, owner of Massanelli’s Cleaners in downtown Jonesboro, moved here from Memphis a few years ago to take over the operation of this decades-old business and soon gained notice for its environmentally friendly processes and chemicals.

Pipkin became involved in both local and statewide endeavors to promote environmental stewardship and renewable energy. Last year he became a key player in the Arkansas Wind Working Group and continued to make contacts with individuals and agencies on a national level, learning more about related issues.

One thing led to another, and he received a unique job offer: to become the Kuskokwim Watershed Council’s Alaskan Brownsfield Coordinator. He starts Friday.

The focus of the program is to collaborate with communities in the Kuskokwim River Watershed — an area covering about 58,000 square miles, larger than the state of Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel combined. Pipkin will work with communities to inventory potential brownfield sites, foster public participation in cleanup and reuse of contaminated sites, provide relevant training, maintain a watershed-wide record of contaminated sites for the public to access and assist with an environmental assessment of sites.

    Brownfields

Brownfields are contaminated sites that could be targeted for cleanup and redevelopment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a brownfields site is defined as “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant.”

In 2002 Congress passed the Small Business Liability Protection and Brownfields Revitalization Act, which authorized funding for states and tribes to develop response programs to address the assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of brownfields. Since its passage, the Brownfields Law has presented a number of opportunities for the cleanup and reuse of contaminated lands.

Examples of potential brownfields include old or illegal dumps; oil spills; abandoned or idle structures with lead paint, asbestos or other hazardous materials; old fuel storage areas or former gas stations; and mine-scarred land.

Types of reuse could be community centers, parks, staging areas, transfer sites, habitat restoration, and housing.

But his purpose in Alaska won’t be entirely about helping the environment. Much of it will have to do with economics.

“Within the last 16 months, the two largest gold veins in the history of the North American continent have been located, prepped for mining and now are just waiting for the 36 indigenous tribes to work out their differences regarding the matter,” Pipkin said.

    Global impact

With all the economic unrest in the world, countries straying from the gold standard and the U.S. dollar, Pipkin said events unfolding around the gold mines — located within his territory — will be one of his major concerns.

“So, aside from the stated brownfields job requirements, my area and territory covered are tasked with three additional social-anthropological areas to attempt to work a bit of magic: the economy — saving the dollar’s value; energy policy — using what source is indigenous to any particular tract of land. Is it to be federally controlled, or continue to be a matter of privatization — where nothing is apparently getting done due to too many vested interests being involved, equaling a state of ceaseless gridlock, too many ulterior motives being manifested by those with the true power to change things for the better ...; and finally, to liaise between the tribes within the areas in question as mediator ... .”

Pipkin said his territory will become one of the world’s hotspots just from a fiduciary standpoint.

“Ditto for renewable energy, etc.,” he said. “Each of us going, in light of what our particular strengths happen to be, are basically being given carte blanche to go to Alaska — imagine an enormous, frigid petri dish — assume and exert influence where necessary, in hoping to create a sustainable model for the lower 48 to follow.”

According to a Kuskokwim Watershed Council press release on Pipkin’s selection for the job, the coordinator would need “GIS capabilities, grant-writing skills, community outreach experience, conflict resolution skills, watershed-water table analytical abilities, a working knowledge of international fishing regulations and maritime law; an extensive grasp of environmental policy, former Bureau of Indian Affairs experience, the ability to speak Russian, and an individual possessing inroads and contacts where many renewable energy sectors are concerned.”

Pipkin, whose resume includes a wide variety of experiences, had picked up some Russian while serving with the U.S. Marines as they trained foreign troops around the time the Soviet Union broke apart. This took place in Alaska, as did his initial cold-weather training with the Marines.

His cold-weather training and love of adventure will be a necessity.

“With my coverage area being approximately 60,000 square miles, and on any day wearing the multiple hats of the White House’s Council on Environmental Quality, the EPA, the Bureau of Indian affairs, various tribal consortiums, the Army Corps of Engineers, but primarily the Kuskokwin River Watershed Council — I could quite possibly find myself in parts unknown for several weeks on end,” Pipkin said.

Pipkin’s wife, Sandie, will handle the business in Jonesboro for the time being. Once their two young daughters have completed the school year at Valley View, she’ll move with them and Pipkin’s mother to Anchorage on a permanent basis.

Pipkin said they have not yet made any decisions regarding the ownership of Massanelli’s. For the time being, he is concentrating on getting established in his new home and preparing to take on much work.

“Yes, my plate is full indeed,” he said. “That is where my motivation to accept the position arises from being equal parts scientist, academic and adventurous outlaw.”

After my last speaking engagement in Little Rock, AR, I walked about the state capitol grounds for a while- and  in doing so- ran across certain statuary and inscriptions there-on of interest; with Veteran’s Day approaching,  I hurriedly snapped a few pix, and headed back to Jonesboro.  Service to one’s country is a multi-faceted, myriad layered and wholly unique experience, for better or worse-  to every citizen / soldier, officer / gentleman or young woman whose ever earned their stripes. After a bit of reflection, the photo which follows, was the one monument I felt said more with less (which is a virtue...)!

Thanks to those of you who forwarded well wishes my way, today; the sentiments expressed were heartfelt and genuine- as is my appreciation.  On behalf of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, though, all I ask of you is at a moment of convenience to remember them: irrespective of party leaning, partisan vitriol or personal affiliations / axes to grind- simply remember them.

Shakespeare proclaimed that: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them- - the subtle nuances contained within the bard’s quip are yours to discern in this arena of ideas. Again, all I ask is that you... remember…

    September / October 2009

    AHHHHH...

Clean once again; this was one hectic / data collection trip where all business was confined to, or, conducted within, the van / lab itself / plus, one quick flight... this lastest endeavor dealing with toxic runoff into our area's watersheds: whether the final resting place of the H2O be lakes, rivers, aquifers, etc. Concrete pipes from seemingly nowhere, emptying sludge into the lakes within State Parks; agribusiness toxicity from herbicides and pesticides - from cotton, rice, corn and soybean feilds along the way taking on the neons of yellow, green and orange when mixed from flash flooding. This trip originated in NW Indiana, then continued into the southern tip of Illinois, a hard left through western Kentucky - and then, my primary area of focus-  following the Mississippi River as it divides Tennessee and Arkansas north to south (basically, from the NE corner of Arkansas, containing Jonesboro, through Helena - West Helena / the Mississippi Delta (much more cotton country here, rather than the rice, soybeans, etc which dominate northern Arkansas). After dropping the materials and samples off to my "moles" in Texas for professional analysis, I hurried home to see the family- then off to take a much needed nap...

If this research provides the facts I am planning to see, coupled with results from my prior work earlier in the year regarding regional bee colonies (CCD) - I may have my 3rd and final Venn Diagram ready to place / overlap the extant two: these are to be the areas (I fear) of confluence / convergence where decades old, military grade, toxic waste is being stored under ground! The Freedom of Information Act has assisted me greatly in clarifying this matter. Also, I can say without fear of recrimination that if my findings do indeed turn out as I foresee them to / bolstered by the work of many more throughout the land: this may become my life's work (a toxic Town Crier). Trust me, folks, had you any idea of the depth and breadth of the literally thousands of utterly toxic dumps and deadly chemicals - directly under our feet-  I know with certainty that our citizens would organize and take to the streets...

Hello, to the Gillow family: Henri, Karen, Matthius, Hannah and Eureka- of Stockholm. Congratulations on Sweden recently assuming the esteemed role of Presidency of the European Union 2009 / 2010; I have often wondered how dramatically different my life, in all imaginable ways, would have varied from the one I now live- had I returned to Sweden with you after Henri's diplomatic stay in the U. S. It's a very surreal, mental exercise. We are all a work in progress turned toward a horizon beyond– some community, some commitment, some justice, some vision, some future– known chiefly through the emblems and signs which pull upon our hopes; reaching into every step of our interpretive journeys; shaping us as surely and mysteriously as the moon pulls the tides. You instilled that into me, and quite a bit of what you predicted, did indeed, manifest. Whatever potential you ever saw in me f i n a l l y did rise to the occasion(s)- it just took about 25 years to do so! I will be in Copenhagen this December; dinner is on me!

Woodstock: 40 Years Since the Seeds Were Planted!

Ok, so, here is my quite short but truly sweet anniversary tribute to Woodstock-- perhaps the greatest music event of all time. On August 15, 1969 (but a mere 5 to 6 weeks before my birth) the first notes rang out at the music festival that struck a "chord" around the world: Woodstock. It's now been 40 years since some of the finest musicians of that time, of anytime, performed for a crowd nearly half a million strong, and many of the ideas, philosophies, and dreams that grew from those fields in Bethel, New York (on Max's farm) are still paving the way(s) today. More than just a concert, the event became a stand against an unjust war and utter irrationality; a peaceful revolution  and a cultural forum for ideas and positive global change-- including today's environmental movement, women's rights, sustainability and community. It also sparked the likes of festivals dedicated to making a difference, including Coachella and Bonnaro. So enjoy the weekend full of documentaries and retrospectives-- and remember, if nothing else, to keep the dream alive in your daily actions; and if your vocation allows-- DREAM BIG; because when our self-awareness enables the realization to dawn on you that our mortality is a fait' acompli: dreams die, we die, unless we see the opportunities for change, to whatever degree our means allow, contained within the sacred seconds of life-- every second...

And in the humble opinion of this former Marine (please, spare me the hate mail and death threats you anonymous miscreants relish in forwarding)-- without question, the utter lunacy of the times was captured, brilliantly, by none other that Country Joe; and to this day-- never has a generation of complete chicken-hawks, rigid ideologues and the pitifully brain-washed received their comeuppance so cleverly. There's a reserved suite, in Rock and Roll Heaven, for Joe over this one lyric alone:

"Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
    Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box..."

One of my true, intellectual heroes, Dr. Michio Kaku; a theoretical physicist without peer.

    http://mkaku.org/

    About the Author:

Dr. Michio Kaku is a theoretical physicist, best-selling author, and popularizer of science. He’s the co-founder of string field theory (a branch of string theory), and continues Einstein’s search to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory.

He has appeared on television (Discovery, BBC, ABC, Science Channel, and CNN to name a few), written for popular science publications like Discover, Wired, and New Scientist, been featured in documentaries like Me & Isaac Newton, and hosted many of his own including BBC’s recent series on Time.

Michio continues Einstein’s search for a “Theory of Everything,” seeking to unify the four fundamental forces of the universe—the strong force, the weak force, gravity and electromagnetism.

He holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York, where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, as well as New York University.

    About the Book:

Physics of the Impossible is a fascinating exploration of the science of the impossible—from death rays and force fields to invisibility cloaks—revealing to what extent such technologies might be achievable decades or millennia into the future.

    (review) From Publisher's Weekly:

In this latest effort to popularize the sciences, City University of New York professor and media star [Michio] Kaku ponders topics that many people regard as impossible, ranging from psychokinesis and telepathy to time travel and teleportation. His Class I impossibilities include force fields, telepathy and antiuniverses, which don’t violate the known laws of science and may become realities in the next century. Those in Class II await realization farther in the future and include faster-than-light travel and discovery of parallel universes. Kaku discusses only perpetual motion machines and precognition in Class III, things that aren’t possible according to our current understanding of science. He explains how what many consider to be flights of fancy are being made tangible by recent scientific discoveries ranging from rudimentary advances in teleportation to the creation of small quantities of antimatter and transmissions faster than the speed of light. Science and science fiction buffs can easily follow Kaku’s explanations as he shows that in the wonderful worlds of science, impossible things are happening every day.

This week, 06.15.09., 1SKY regional reps will be holding meetings at the congressional office of Rep. Marion Berry / District 1 - Jonesboro, regarding the state's continued usage and increased percentage / allotment of coal within Arkansas' energy portfolio; the Representative is a fine, fine man - yet, the ceaseless portrayal of coal as being a "clean" renewable source is both a misnomer and oxymoronic...

My two recent academic grads, Olivia from pre-k to k / and Posey from k to first grade are, both, quite ecstatic to say the very least- not only are they one year closer to making their own, unique environmental marks upon the earth (Olivia as an agricultural phenom / Organic Farmer, the elder as a Rural Veterinarian)- but they were quite pleased as one of their grad gifts arrived via ups: the "Green Gorilla" bed accessories have finally been placed in their respective rooms...

***BeeKeeping update: some days you're the dog, still others, you're the fire hydrant: this particular afternoon I was most assuredly the latter: oh, I'd say a handful of direct stings adjacent to the eye, upon the face and neck, as well as, several more critters which had to be sent to that much poeticized "hive in the sky", after the little ladies invaded my ear canal- getting a bit too up close and personal / even for me- rendered it so...

Sustainability- at times- is one of the most difficult issues on our proverbial plate(s) to precisely articulate; when you surpass the seemingly mundane financial, statistical and fiduciary bottom lines (proper due diligence)- its imperative to take the myriad discussions into areas where some find shelter and belonging (a more spiritual connectedness), while still others consider the process nothing more than faddish esoterics (the staid, overly-stiff, sedate bunch): to the former I say, prepare to be validated / have a religious experience; to the latter- inhale, exhale; loosen your tie; and come stand by me...

Senator Blanche Lincoln’s Schedule for June 12-13:
Arkansas’s Senior Senator to Address Delta Council, Meet with Community Leaders in West Memphis, Attend Deviled Egg Day in Osceola

Washington – This week, U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln will address agricultural producers and economic development advocates at the annual Delta Council event, meet with a local police chief and elected officials from East Arkansas, and travel to Osceola to attend Mississippi County’s Deviled Egg Day.  The following is Lincoln’s schedule for June 12-13:

    Friday, June 12

10:30 AM: Lincoln will serve as the keynote speaker for the 74th annual Delta Council meeting in Cleveland, Miss. Lincoln is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, and serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Rural Revitalization, Conservation, Forestry and Credit.  She has served on the Agriculture Committee since entering the Senate in 1999 and played a key role in the 2008 farm bill debate.  Lincoln, a native of Helena, Ark., hails from a seventh-generation Arkansas farm family. Delta State University, Bologna Performing Arts Center, Cleveland, Miss.

2:30 PM: Lincoln will meet with Madison Police Chief Jonathan Parks.  Chief Parks was Lincoln’s nominee to attend the Criminal Justice Institute’s Rural Executive Management Institute (REMI) held last month in Reno, NV.  REMI provides law enforcement officials from rural areas the opportunity to receive training they might not otherwise have access to due to restrictive budgets.  West Memphis City Hall, 205 South Redding Street.

    Dear Len,

John Fetterman looks more like he belongs on the Pittsburgh
Steelers offensive line than who he really is -- a
Harvard-educated mayor of a struggling western Pennsylvania
    steel town.

In Braddock, PA, the hats are hard, just like the economic
times. Once called the jewel of the Monongahela, this factory
    town has seen better days.

That's why Mayor Fetterman is a champion for another kind of cap
-- a carbon cap. Because John Fetterman knows that capping
carbon will put the citizens of his endangered town back to
    work.

We want all of America to meet John Fetterman and hear his
    story...

Len Pipkin is a man on a “green” mission. In the past several years he has not only worked to implement environmentally friendly practices into his business, Massanelli’s Cleaners and Laundry, but has traveled countless miles across the U.S. educating himself about green issues, most specifically renewable energy.

A Memphis native and educator himself with a master’s degree in exceptional student education from Barry University in Miami, Pipkin now is educating others about sustainable energy — all on a volunteer basis.

“We have to take ownership of where we are — whether we are responsible for it or not,” said the exceedingly articulate former U.S. Marine. “We must set a course of where we want to go and do whatever is necessary to make it happen.”

Pipkin’s mission started with Massanelli’s and has evolved from there.
“We have, and continue to use, a natural petroleum solvent,” Pipkin said. “The solvent is gentle without sacrificing its cleaning capabilities, making it superior for our clothes and safer for the environment. Green will slowly be incorporated into every facet of Massanelli’s Cleaners, which is leading the small business community in awareness and commitment to the environment.”

Massanelli’s uses this biodegradable solvent as opposed to perchloroethylene, a potential carcinogen used by many dry cleaners nationwide.

Other examples of the business’ green bent are: painting with low VOC materials; using low-energy light bulbs exclusively via a green procurement arrangement with all vendors; recycling hangers to a much greater degree; giving customers reusable delivery bags; and offering the choice of degradable poly bags or no bags on cleaned garments.

But much more interesting than green dry cleaning is Pipkin’s true passion: working in every way possible to make a difference in the world around him through action and education.

“It is just a right and worthy cause, whether I’m able see the results in my lifetime or not,” he said of his efforts. “My kids and grandkids and the community will reap the benefits.”

Last year was a blur of travel for Pipkin, including the following “green” itineraries:

    • July 2008 — Leadership program at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. Sessions covered topics such as renewable utility applications, biofuels and transportation and energy efficient building applications, as well as in-depth review of future energy markets and analysis tools for renewable energy and energy efficiency applications.

    • September 2008 — Green Jobs Now rally in Little Rock, a networking fair that offered students at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock an opportunity to investigate employment opportunities offered by sustainable companies that are part of the growing movement to curb greenhouse gas emissions, eliminate toxins and protect natural systems.

    • November 2008 — Green Festival in Washington, D.C., a joint project of the Global Exchange and Green America that celebrated what is working throughout this country for people, business and the environment.

Pipkin also attended the Net Impact North America Conference in Philadelphia, a symposium that featured speakers on such topics as corporate social responsibility, energy and the environment, international development, social impact finance and social entrepreneurship.

Also in November, in an effort to help procure international institutions willing to partner with institutions of higher learning in Arkansas, Pipkin attended the U.S-European Union workshop in Atlanta, securing one of approximately 300 lay seats at the conference.

“In an increasingly globalized economy, science and technology careers extend beyond national boundaries,” he explained. “Universities and research institutes worldwide are addressing these developments by setting up exchange programs, double and/or joint degrees and foreign campuses. Several EU-U.S. co-operation ventures promote the training and mobility of researchers and are likely to be further developed.

    • February 2009 — meeting with Sen. Blanche Lincoln in Washington, D.C., to “lobby for our state’s fair share of the stimulus/reinvestment package.”

    • March 2009 — Pipkin was invited to speak to business students and staff at UALR concerning “ethical, scrupulous, environmentally friendly business practices and philosophies, the state of renewable energy sectors within Arkansas and a basic, extemporaneous discussion on what trends I see, what opportunities should manifest and where I would position myself as an entrepreneur ahead of the ‘green’ boom to be arriving within our state over the next 12 to 24 months, then logically taking the trends five years, 10 years, 20 years, etc.”

Chair of Arkansas’ Renewable Energy Division environmental education and outreach committee, Pipkin feels strongly about his cause, and points to serious consequences for future generations if we fail to live responsibly today.

“Folks, if we truly desire for our children and grandchildren to live in a tangible, actualized 21st century community, it’s incumbent upon those in seats imbued with decision-making authority to make it so. This isn’t rocket science — it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. One ending is auspicious, indeed; the other having irrevocable and irreversible outcomes.”

Lecturing at UALR: March / 2009

Ladies and Gents: Thank you so very much for the kindness, attentiveness and interest afforded me this morning. Please know that in spite of my rambling, unorthodox, unpolished presentation skills, I tried my best to make the commentary properly hopeful - tried to illustrate an alternative way of operating an industry which I find to be, although experimental, more fully alive and durable. Geography, history, leadership, party affiliations, economic systems and advantages that we traditionally tend to base the concept of success upon are marginal at best; illusory at their worst. Community relationships, the cohesion amongst citizens are the benchmarks by which to measure the genuine well-being of any given area: choosing to be accountable, creating contexts of hospitality and possibility, these are the actions that bring the gifts of those on the margins to the center; this is power; through community, your caring for one another brings forth what is desired. That's the essence and impetus behind my lecturing at UALR today, I care about you. Some people go days, weeks, months, years, at times, longer, never having someone convey that they care for them. If that's the case with anyone I encountered today, that's tragic, but, more importantly, at an end. Never forget the "bridge generation" analogy; know that I arise daily and toil for outcomes I very well may not live to see fully realized - for you. Peace, love and understanding create community; creation implies action: Get Active - Tag, You're It... lp

Swaggerty Creek Clean Up / Restoration: Sat, March 14th

    Ecological Conservation Organization
    120 S. Cross St.
    Little Rock, AR  72201

Swaggerty Creek, running through Crump Park on W 33rd St., Little Rock, AR, is a small tributary of Fourche Creek. ECO restored the creek to a more natural state, several years back, that encourages bio-diversity and natural habitat to indigenous species.

Unfortunately, like most restored natural areas, maintenance is a continuing, though very necessary, reality.

A request for help in removal of ragweed and trash in the restoration area has been issued to all environmentally minded folk.

Appropriate attire (such as jeans, long sleeve shirts, gloves, and outdoor shoes or boots) is essential. Also very helpful would be industrial garbage bags (for trash collection), machetes (yes!), and hip waders (for litter in the water); the latter two making for one hell of a fashion statement - ha ha...

Our meeting place will be in the Crump Park parking lot at 9 a.m.; clean up will continue through 5 p.m. If you can make it anytime within the given time parameter - it would be greatly appreciated - unless you arrive at, say, at 4:45 p.m.; in that instance, remember, some on hand will have... machetes'!!!

A lunch break will take place around noon. Hope to see both old friends and new acquaintances there!

    Letter to the Editor

Jonesboro Sun, Friday, February 6th, 2009

    "Turning point now..."

It has happened before. When we look back at great turning points, the movements within the storied arc of history within Western civilization, to include our very own national narrative as well, we see that each was driven by a unique confluence of events: a society ripe for change; a new generation ready to drive that change; the emergence of one or a few local, state, and national leaders to articulate needs and set agendas; and in many instances, technological or economic shifts that made innovative action a possibility.

From the European Enlightenment: The Power of Technology; The Industrial Revolution: Economic Creativity; The American Revolution: The Spark of a Powerful Issue; The Abolition of Slavery: A Spiritual Awakening; The Progressive Movement: Social Reform Reshaping Politics; The Freedom Movements of the Twentieth Century: The People Rising up. It can, and is, happening again now in the form of a Sustainability Revolution.

A new day has dawned, a doorway has presented itself before us; all we must simply, though bravely, do is place our irrevocable trust in one another and cross the threshold together into a blindingly bright unknown: one completely rife with untapped environmental stewardship opportunities coupled with a dynamic, robust, economic growth where sustainability proves to be a win-win scenario for all involved stakeholders; diverse facets coexisting in a symbiotic, synergistic union heretofore unrealized throughout Arkansas.

Wind energy, solar power, fuels manufactured from vegetative waste byproducts, industry becoming operational from geothermal heat drawn from the earth’s very core, mankind’s garbage fueling modes of mass transit-public transportation; no longer science fiction, rather reality, these technologies exist and are headed to our great state far more quickly than most can comprehend.

Sight vs. vision is the concept to keep uppermost in mind within the coming years. Indeed, this long-term, incremental implementation, visionary approach will be the first step to making the rearrangement of Jonesboro so. Few of us can scarcely imagine the worlds in which our grandparents and parents came of age within; conversely, imagine the world in which our children and grandchildren will come of age. We are but one brief generation in the long, inexorable march of time. Their hopes and dreams are not ours to either preclude or eradicate through short-sightedness.

The future is now. With gratitude toward those who preceded us, and with blessings toward those to follow, join me in walking the path to the next phase in our societal evolution — arm and arm.

On the Hill with Senator Lincoln (D-AR), Lobbying for Equitable, Renewable Energy Appropriations

I just wanted to let everyone know that my visit with Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas) has been finalized:

    Thursday, February 5th at 10am.

If you go to her website lincoln.senate.gov you will see that she recently co-sponsored the "Rural Revitalization Act of 2009"; taken in conjunction with the upcoming stimulus package, I hope to return to Jonesboro with concrete answers as to how this will affect our city, county and state; what criteria were used in the prioritizing and allocation of funds and when said monies could realistically be expected to arrive in our citizenry's hands...

Also, I am hoping to obtain answers to questions regarding renewable energy and sustainability: those germane to tax incentives for investors within these myriad sectors, the creation of a renewable energy portfolio for our city / state, the need for strategically positioned sustainability officers throughout Arkansas and the functions that would fall under said individual(s) purview's, green job corps implementation, the prospect of expanding our mass transit system, carbon sequestration methods / progress within existing coal plants and the time-tables regarding funds being appropriated for immediate infrastructure needs.

If anyone should desire to speak with me while I am in D.C. meeting with the Senator, members of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, as well as, members of the Department of Agriculture - do not hesitate in contacting me via my blackberry; I plan on leaving for the nation's capitol by the close of business 02.02.09...

The following letter was delivered, personally, to Arkansas’ Governor Beebe, December 9, 2008; the press conference / hearing was conducted in the State Capitol Building’s (see photo below) former Supreme Court Room. By proxy, I was the northeastern Arkansas delegate to speak on the record for those in opposition to the SWEPCO “clean coal plant” in production in southwestern Arkansas; esteemed members were in the chamber from the Sierra Club, the Audubon Society, the medical community; respected biologists and economists as well as members of the Governor’s own Climate Initiative personnel were, all, equally persuasive and passionate

Actions and deeds at this juncture are truly beginning to disagree with Mr. Beebe’s own written word(s); contradictions abound; and a total abrogation of decision making powers which, legislatively, do indeed fall under his direct purview - are becoming an all too commonplace occurrence. I fear that, ultimately, the quite honorable Governor may - inadvertently - be “hoisted by his own petard…”

    Steps Taken to be GreenAR:

2nd hand – Thrift stores, trading with friends, garage sales, bazaars.

Local foods – Friends’ gardens, CSA’s, local stores.

Simplicity – Learning what I need and purging what I don’t.

Focus on individual health – Exercise, good foods, vitamins, first aid and preventative consideration.

Sharing – Donating my time to teach classes, train new workers, write articles, guide projects, help where needed.

Recycling – I consciously recycle all items leaving my home and as a result produce little landfill trash. I love finding unique ways to utilize thrown away materials.

Support – I make an effort to put my dollars to what I want to see in the world. This means I try and support businesses, individuals, and experiences that feed me and that I want to see continue in my community.

Spirit – My life is a meld of spirit and nature and body. My continued growth is dependent on my spiritual nature.

Place – I have recognized my place of greatest influence and power and opportunity is here in Arkansas, where my roots are. I love visiting other places, especially to learn new ways I can help solve Arkansas’ issues.

Water – I filter all of my water including a chlorine filter on my shower. I use low-flow aerators and shower heads.

Re-use – I love my Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottle and my stainless steel coffee and tea cup! They go with me everywhere!

Transport – I drive a compact car that runs on diesel. I fill up with biodiesel from the pump when possible.

    Hard-to-Take Steps:

Driving – I’m addicted to jumping into my Jetta and jetting. I work miles from my home. I drive to meetings, grocery, laundry, entertainment, everything.

Reduction of eating on the go – It seems my schedule keeps me running through meals and catching food on the go. This causes an increase in the waste I produce away from home and often results in less healthy choices.

Finding healing time – I find that often my personal health is the last on my list. I don’t make time for exercise, art, good meals, vitamins, or time out of the city in the woods, while I continue to pile on the stress.

    Future Steps to be GreenAR:

    • Buying from Arkansas Sustainability Network’s Local Food Club
    • Setting up a disaster kit with water, solar, food, first-aid, etc.
    • Writing about green issues for local publications
    • Eating and cooking at home
    • Making healthier decisions and habits

Favorite AR Produce: Armstead Mountain Farm – Sue and Rusty Nuffer have known me since birth and are thus close family. Their farming is so essential to so many lives, and it is consistently the best I’ve ever tasted!

Favorite AR Group: While I’m always partial to Arkansas Earth Day, I also appreciate the work that the Arkansas Earth Institute is doing to reach people where they are.

Favorite AR Business: Again, I’m partial here to ecoIntegration whose innovative business structure and tactics are on the cutting edge of the crosshairs of business reformation and green implementation

Latest "letter to the editor" regarding more environmental progress throughout Arkansas; the NO NEW COAL movement, here, is garnering deserved merit...

    Letters To The Editor

    Saving the planet

I would like to proffer the editors of The Sun much praise for reporting The Associated Press story on Tuesday, regarding the coal-fire plant permit being placed into an indefinite moratorium as it pertains to the proposed site in southwestern Arkansas. According to information gleaned from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality Web site, the permit review has been officially halted at this juncture.

The key to structuring a global economy that can sustain fiscal progress is the creation of an honest market. We need to begin insisting on knowing the ecological truth behind business decisions and their long-term effects. Lest any of us forget, myriad economic systems of the past have collapsed due to the engineers of that era being precluded from telling the underpinning, economic truth; likewise, capitalism itself will eventuate in ruination, as well, if today’s architects do not allow for transparency or expect full disclosure regarding their actions inherent ecological truth being made manifest.

Big-Coal has thrived, to date, because the bona fide cost of air pollution, acid rain, miner’s safety, mountain devastation and the ubiquitous, global warming are invisible collateral damage affecting all. I assure you there will never be a surtax on our electric bills which itemizes the deleterious effects these antediluvian facilities have on their surrounding communities and its inhabitants: increased asthma attacks in children, upper respiratory conditions in the aged, deforestation, destruction of natural habitats, all, empirically linked to the unrestricted (CO2) carbon emissions belched into the atmosphere from these complexes.

I wonder if many of us fully grasp the depth and breadth of what a kilowatt, indeed, costs in human currency?

With all the stellar news, of late, regarding Arkansas being thrust into the forefront of the renewable energy industry- fiscal year 2009- I thought it to be quite serendipitous to have stumbled upon this little gem a while back; you never know what one may find while meandering through Indiana!

    http://www.midamericawindmillmuseum.org/index.php

Welcome to the Mid-America Windmill Museum

Harnessing the Power of the Wind

The Mid-America Windmill Museum’s goal is to provide a museum to collect, display, preserve and tell the story of wind power from its origination through the American windmill to the present day. Our purpose is to collect, preserve, exhibit, educate, and build awareness.

Through video presentations, guided tours, exhibits, interactive displays, photographs, and a museum library, volunteers will provide visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of windmills and wind power as they reflect the changes in technology and society.

Windmills are unique machines designed to direct the wind’s energy to perform work. They are engineering marvels that were both functional and gracefully attractive. The American windmill was designed with the thought in mind to be self-governing and require little attention other than lubrication. To preserve the various types of this extraordinary machine that accelerated the development of the heartland and the Great Plains is a responsibility that must be assumed for the benefit of future generations. It is a vital part of American history.

The Kendallville Windmill Museum and Historical Society has been organized as the one official organization for the purpose of restoring, preserving and perpetuating the American windmill. The Mid-America Windmill Museum owes it existence to the foresight and planning of C. Russell Baker. Born into a family of windmillers, he has a strong desire to preserve the historical knowledge of that period of American history. In his words, “The Kendallville Windmill Museum is projected as a cultural center and it is hoped the Museum will reflect the interest of windmillers throughout the Midwest.”

It is fitting that Kendallville have a windmill museum, since Flint & Walling Company was a major windmill manufacturer. In addition, there were ten other well known manufacturers within a 100-mile radius as well as some twenty other lesser known companies. No other place in the country had such a concentration of windmill manufacturers. Since there were so many different windmill manufacturers within the tri-state area, it was decided to name the newest Northeastern Indiana cultural tourist attraction the “Mid-America Windmill Museum” which allowed the museum to encompass a greater area of interest and include the other windmill companies that existed in this area.

    Don’t let JETS die

[Last] week I received a “Jets for Jonesboro; Yes to Public Transportation” fact sheet in the mail. Upon reading the flyer, I must admit to being astounded in learning that a “NO” vote on Nov. 4 would subsequently result in the program’s discontinuation. This letter is an urgent plea to all stakeholders not to let this civic indecency occur.

While true, sustainable transportation is often considered a metropolitan issue, a city such as our own — one poised on the very threshold of becoming a regional beacon of environmental economics — would be exhibiting an utter lack of vision in opposing not just the program’s viability but its aggressive growth as well.

What is needed at this unique moment in time are strategies garnering wide support across local communities, practical agendas alleviating clogged roadways and conserving our finite natural resources, all the while promoting and enacting fairness and social justice. Now is the time to use our political sway to exhibit demonstrable agility in decision-making, policy creation, partnership formations with area leaders and visionary implementation of public infrastructure. Once enough positive, ecologically sane trends converge, they will begin to organically reinforce one another.

One responsibility we all have is choice, choices that can and will directly affect the lives of our children and their decedents alike. Yet another responsibility we shoulder is to do all within our power to ensure the future we leave to the aforementioned progeny is a new era worthy of the curiosity, eagerness, inquisitiveness, aptitudes, skills and intelligence they will surely possess; this is accomplished at the ballot box — via votes that challenge our elected officials to genuinely address our collective concerns.

What any individual can do is limited without a team approach; optimum outcomes need shared goodwill. Call now upon the proverbial “better angels of our nature,” as we stand and claim ownership of our very lives and those of future lineages while vigorously debating the implementation of policy that will either bear later, though imminent, fruit or produce crops that will needlessly, though surely, die upon a withering vine.

Maker of turbines settling in Jonesboro!!!

Posted on Saturday, October 25, 2008

Arkansas is quickly becoming a player in the nation’s growing wind-turbine industry.

Nordex USA Inc., part of a German company that makes wind turbines for use around the world, said Friday that it plans to locate its $ 100 million U. S. manufacturing facility in Jonesboro.

The plant will employ 700 people at an average wage of $ 17 an hour, Nordex said.

Arkansas already is hosting LM Glasfiber of Lunderskov, Denmark, which said last year that it would invest $ 150 million for facilities to build wind-turbine blades at the Little Rock Port and hire up to 1, 500 workers. The 130-acre site also has become the company’s U. S. headquarters.

And earlier this month, Polymarin Composites, a Dutch wind-turbine-blade manufacturer, said it and one of its suppliers, Wind Water Technology, plan to spend $ 16 million to renovate an empty distribution center in south Little Rock as their manufacturing site and create about 830 jobs over the next four years.

Combined, the four companies plan to invest more than $ 260 million and hire about 3, 000 workers.

The United States added nearly 1, 400 megawatts of new wind-energy capacity during the second quarter of 2008, providing enough electricity to power more than 400, 000 houses, according to a report released this week by the American Wind Energy Association.

Wind power accounted for more than one-third of the new U. S. electric-generating capacity installed in 2007, and the industry is projected to grow at a 45 percent pace for the second straight year, Randall Swisher, the association’s executive director, told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Nordex AG is based near Hamburg, Germany, and has established a U. S. headquarters in Chicago. It has offices and subsidiaries in 18 countries and employs 2, 000 people internationally. In international markets, LM Glasfiber is a supplier for Nordex.

In Jonesboro, Nordex will make every part of a wind turbine except the tower. Nordex expects to be producing the wind turbines by 2010.

Nordex chose Jonesboro after originally considering 35 sites in the United States, said Ralf Sigrist, president of Nordex USA.

Selling points for Jonesboro included its central location, access to two railroad lines and a four-lane highway, and availability of training programs via Arkansas State University and other northeast Arkansas educational institutions, Sigrist said.

Nordex’s plant, which will be on 187 acres in the Craighead Technology Park, is a “key pillar in our international strategy,” Thomas Richterich, Nordex AG’s chief executive officer, said in a prepared statement.

“It will enable us to serve the U. S., one of the fastest growing markets for wind energy, and come closer to our objective of generating 20 percent of our revenues in the U. S.,” Richterich said.

Arkansas has been actively courting wind-energy companies, said Scott Hardin, a spokesman for the Arkansas Economic Development Commission.

“Wind energy is one of the sectors that we’re putting a lot of marketing and recruitment efforts behind right now,” Hardin said. “We’ve done that for a variety of reasons. No. 1 is location. We’re surrounded by six of the top 20 states for wind energy, and what’s widely considered to be one of the biggest untapped energy markets in the world, which is Texas.” The other states are Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.

Clustering companies in one industry can be beneficial to a state, said Kathy Deck, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

“When you cluster companies together like this, the main benefit you see is a trained work force that has a variety of options,” Deck said. “So a company sees a work force that is already ready and available and has the knowledge about what to do. That makes it very conducive to put the like kinds of industries or other parts of a supply chain in a similar place. Clustering can be a very good economic development strategy.” A $ 17-an-hour salary equals about $ 35, 300 a year, near the national per capita income of $ 36, 300. Arkansas business and economic development leaders have set a goal to raise the state’s per capita income, currently about $ 27, 900 a year, to the national level. The state hopes to accomplish that, in part, by attracting high-paying knowledge-based businesses.

But manufacturing is the worst performing sector of the Arkansas economy. Arkansas has lost more than 64, 000 jobs in manufacturing since 1995 and almost 5, 000 in the past 12 months.

Rheem Air Conditioning Products in Fort Smith said on Tuesday that it would lay off 185 workers, or 15 percent of its labor force. Last month, Whirlpool Corp. said it would lay off 700 workers from its Fort Smith plant in November. Other plants in Bentonville, Clinton, Conway, Maumelle, Pine Bluff and Warren have announced this year that they will lay off more than 1, 400 people.

“An economic developer’s job is not just to attract knowledge-based industries,” Deck said. “They want to work to provide good jobs for as many Arkansans as they can. So they’re working at recruiting a variety of companies. A win is a win, and you don’t turn up your nose at it.” Ironically, with the emergence of four wind-energy plants in the state, there is not a sustainable supply of wind sufficient to make Arkansas a likely user of wind power.

“The state of Arkansas is not within the main wind regions where there’s a lot to be expected in terms of wind farms operating,” Sigrist said.

Officials are expecting more wind-related suppliers to follow Nordex to northeast Arkansas.

“Because Nordex will utilize many different suppliers, it’s my understanding that Jonesboro and our region have an opportunity to try to attract suppliers to the area to service the wind industry,” said Mark Young, president of the Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Nordex’s decision to locate in Jonesboro was the second major economic development announcement for the city this month. Last week, Nice-Pak Products Inc. of Orangeburg, N. Y., said it would hire 300 people and invest $ 40 million to build a plant to make premoistened wipes.

    By Joshua Boak

    Tribune reporter

    10:35 AM CDT, October 24, 2008

Wind turbine maker Nordex AG announced plans Friday to open a $100 million factory in Jonesboro, Ark., with production starting in 2010.

The German Nordex, which recently selected Chicago as its North American headquarters, is making an aggressive move into the United States.

The company intends for 20 percent of its revenue to come from America. It generated worldwide revenue of roughly $1 billion last year, with sales primarily in Europe and China.

The new factory would manufacture every part of the turbine other than the tower.

A Growing Green Economy in Little Rock !!!

Little Rock, Arkansas' green economy is growing. Last year, Dutch company LM Glasfiber announced the planned construction of a wind turbine blade manufacturing facility in Little Rock AR. The temporary facility currently employs about 500 people while the company will eventually employ more than 1000 green collar workers once construction is completed on the new facility. The Little Rock facility serves as the company's North American headquarters.

Last week, it was announced two more companies in the wind energy industry would began manufacturing activities in Little Rock: Polymarin Composites, another Dutch company, and its supplier Wind Water Technology. Polymarin Composites manufactures blades while Wind Water Technology manufactures blade motors. They will co-locate in a converted Levi Strauss factory and will create a combined 830 new green collar jobs for central Arkansas...

Business owner thinking green in Northeast Ark.

    http://www.jonesborosun.com/archived_story.php?ID=35101

    October 8, 2008

JONESBORO — When Jonesboro business owner Len Pipkin attended a conference on wind energy in Little Rock this summer, he returned with a new title: co-chair for environmental education and outreach for the Arkansas Wind Working Group.

The new position — which includes travels to conferences and grassroots activities around the state and throughout the country — is something he’s happy to fit in his busy schedule as owner of Massanelli’s Cleaners.

He’s already leveraged his role to attend the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., in July and the Green Jobs Now rally in Little Rock last month.

Not only does he want to learn as much as he can about renewable energy and “green” technology and industries, Pipkin wants to bring his experiences to Northeast Arkansas and help pave the way for a whole new way of doing business. In addition to making his own business as eco-friendly as possible, he has several initiatives planned for this area in the near future, including an ambitious collaboration designed to attract green industries to the region.

“The only concrete event I am working diligently on at the moment should occur toward the latter part of the fourth quarter 2008,” Pipkin said. “I’ll only leak a bare minimum at this time: It’s going to involve members of both the United Steelworkers association and the Sierra Club, aka the blue-green alliance, at which time I hope to unveil a program that would create Jonesboro’s very own Green Jobs Corps.”

Pipkin said a green jobs corps would come about gradually and would start with screening a select group of people and training them through collaboration with some of Jonesboro’s existing industries. They would transition into paid internships and ultimately be marketed as a “green” work force.

“Gradually you build a relatively high percentage of people in a geographic area that bringing those green companies into this area would necessitate,” he said.

    Similar work

Other cities around the United States are working on similar efforts. One that Pipkin is using as a template is the Oakland Green Jobs Corps in California.

Pipkin’s new role has made him a bridge between those interested in such efforts and institutions that are seriously working toward them. One of his duties is visiting several universities around Arkansas to review what they provide in this field.

“These visits will be to assess curricula options available, taking an overview of degree programs as they relate directly to renewable energy, researching certifications offered, numbering community outreach programs available to students through both paid and unpaid scholarships with a Leadership, Academics and Operations scorecard to grade each school upon in hand,” he said.

    Festival, conference

He will also attend the Washington D.C., Green Festival Nov. 8-9 and the Net Impact North America Conference in Philadelphia the following week. All this will culminate in a workshop on international cooperation and U.S.-EU ventures in research Nov. 17-18 in Atlanta.

“I petitioned for and received one of only approximately 300 lay seats available worldwide,” Pipkin said. “It’s one of the genuine first steps in making the solutions to our myriad environmental problems global in scope. It’s going to be a breathtaking gathering of world dignitaries; I am so very thrilled and honored to be attending.”

He’s still working on helping to implement a program called KidWind in local schools and has plans for other events in Jonesboro. But in the meantime he said he wants to encourage people to get involved in whatever way they can.

“Ask yourself the questions, ‘What do you really desire from life? What kind of life and what type of society do you want to bequeath to future generations?’” he said. “These are not issues we can simply leave to the whimsical vagaries of chance, to the decisions of political leaders, to the most readily seen, progressive social policies. Quite to the contrary: To purposefully address the issues of today and pursue the solutions of tomorrow, one must be and remain vigilantly aware. The task of building a truly sustainable society is not a game of solitaire. This game we play as a team.”

Concert Review: Maroon 5 and Counting Crows at Superpages.com Center
    by Brenna Rushing, Source:
    Pegasus News

The grassy lawn felt like one of many summer night ingredients, along with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. People of all ages settled into the Superpages.com Center on Saturday night to enjoy not only the prime setting, but the Counting Crows and Maroon 5 on stage.

As night fell, more people filled the seats and the lawn, proving that the Maroon 5 and Counting Crows performances were long overdue in Dallas. If the show didn’t sell out, only sparing bits of lawn were available.

Maroon 5 was undoubtedly the hit of the night. The second their stage lit up with a blindingly brilliant light show, everyone, including all of the women swooning over Adam Lavine, jumped to their feet in excitement. They kicked it off with "Harder to Breathe," leading the way for every one of their radio hits.

It was unexpected that Lavine wasn’t spotlighted as the main attraction onstage. He came out simultaneously with the band at the beginning, and the lights were never only on him. Despite the fact that his look is going the way of the modern rockstar, (full sleeve tattoo, tight v-neck shirt, skinny jeans), the staging emphasis was fairly evenly spread about the band members, foregoing qualms of any accompanying rockstar ego.

M5's set list was well-balanced, jumping from their first album to the newest one entitled It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. Lavine sang the beginning of "Won’t Go Home Without You" a capella, creating a silent awe over the audience. Aside from that, they sang every song exactly like the radio version.

At the end of their set, Lavine threw his guitar on the stage, potentially doing some real damage. But instead of walking away in glory, he picked it up and selected a lucky fan in the crowd to give it to.

"Earth / Arbor Day" article by Karin Hill: Jonesboro Sun

As Browning said of the Emperor Justinian's digest of ancient Roman Laws, the poets there:

    "Made precise,
what simply sparkled in mankind's eyes before,
twitched in their brow or quivered on their lips,
waited the speech they called but would not come."

This writer, orator, teacher, advocate, naturalist, chef, renaissance woman- - elevates and invigorates; lifts horizons; softens hardened hearts; lightens gloom- - helping many to see the essentials of life more clearly... Eternal Thanks, Karen

Small Business Aid for Veterans / Atlmire (D-PA)

Congress is getting closer to passing legislation that would help
veterans and reservists who own small businesses. The bill would
    create a $50,000 no-collateral, small-business loan for reservists
and vets. In addition, it would add four new veteran-business
outreach centers and create an interagency federal task force on
small-business issues. The compromise bill passed the Senate in
mid-December before passing the House recently with modest changes.
Now, the bill heads back to the Senate. The chief sponsor of the
House version of the bill, Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA) said the
programs in place are helpful, but he believes "more can still be done."

    Brown’s Mission

The mission of Brown University is to serve the community, the nation, and the world by discovering, communicating, and preserving knowledge and understanding in a spirit of free inquiry, and by educating and preparing students to discharge the offices of life with usefulness and reputation. We do this through a partnership of students and teachers in a unified community known as a university-college.

    http://www.visitrhodeisland.com/

    Olivia (pre-k3); Posey (pre-k4)...

    Why Brown?

Brown students value the University’s open curriculum and the freedom they have to shape their own academic program.

By crafting your own curriculum with the guidance and assistance of your advisors and teachers, you will be challenged to define liberal education for yourself. You will be encouraged to explore widely across the disciplines. In doing so you will learn the powers and limits of different ways of knowing.

Brown students and faculty are typically innovative, creative, and intellectually restless, never satisfied with the conventional way of doing things, always eager to cross boundaries and to experiment with new approaches to solving problems.

Belonging to such a community is a stimulating experience that will help you learn and grow. Instead of trying to inculcate a single, common tradition of values and beliefs, Brown’s curriculum encourages the exploration of different ways of thinking, judging, and imagining. The goal of such a curriculum is to create cosmopolitan citizens who revel in and are eager to contribute to a world of multiplicity and change.

One of the most important goals of a liberal education at Brown is to develop active learners who take responsibility for their own education. You will have extraordinary independence here and an array of intellectual and creative opportunities. Deans, faculty, and the many groups of peer advisors stand ready to help you make wise choices and find your way. To be an individual, you will find, requires a community, because we all have the power to help and enrich each other.

Brown values diversity — our differences enable us to learn from one another and to open up possibilities for creativity and discovery that would be missing in a homogeneous world.

Brown Medical School and Graduate School attract physicians, researchers, teachers, students, and significant research programs and funding. Brown, the third largest employer in the Providence area, also helps to develop new businesses, and research opportunities, through its partnerships statewide.

Brown welcomes you to a very special city and state. Providence is a “Renaissance” city of arts and cross-culturalism. It is the capital of Rhode Island, which was the first of the thirteen colonies to declare independence. Rhode Island has historically fostered a strong spirit of independence among its citizenry – the majestic State House is topped with a statue of “the Independent Man.” Brown is proud to claim four of the state’s top office-holders as alumni. Governor Donald Carcieri ’65, Attorney General Patrick Lynch ’87, Providence Mayor David Cicilline ’83, and Senator Lincoln Chaffee ’75.

Brown works closely with leaders of Providence’s public education system and human service agencies to leverage the resources of the University’s centers and programs in support of our city residents.

Brown actively promotes public service opportunities at colleges across the country, and is a founding member of a consortium of private colleges and hospitals that works on behalf of Providence children.

“What the student wants is a monk’s cell, well lit and heated, with a corner from which they can look at the stars.”
    — Le Corbusier (1887-1965)

Life on the Brown campus leads to lifelong friendships. Brown will provide the room — nicer than the monk’s cell Le Corbusier envisioned — the light, and the heat. How you look at the stars is up to you...
